Mossel Bay the town of first's in South Africa.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲

As we approach the end of 2024, it's a great moment to revisit the rich history behind Mossel Bay’s name.

In 1497, Vasco da Gama named the area Bahia or Aquada São Brás (Watering Place of Saint Blaize). Years later, in 1601, Dutch navigator Paulus van Caerden gave it the name Mossel Bay, inspired by the abundance of mussels found along the coastline. Van Caerden described it as:
"We found it a lovely land, without many trees, but with deer and elephants. Apart from water, we got little refreshment except for mussels, and therefore gave it the name of Mossel Bay."

A lesser-known fact is that the town was initially registered as Aliwal (Mossel Bay) in its early days, though the name Aliwal was eventually dropped, leaving us with the name we proudly use today.

Mossel Bay is a town with a history as captivating as its landscapes—where the past meets the present in one unforgettable destination.
