We're thrilled to announce we've spotted our first whales a month early! Get ready for an unforgettable experience as Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena australis) and Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) arrive on our shores. Mossel Bay's protected bay makes it the perfect spot for whale watching, earning it the title of Whale Watching mecca of the Garden Route in South Africa. Whale season is usually from mid June to mid October!

In the first three photos is the Humpback Whale:
- Found in all the world's oceans, traveling vast distances to eat and breed
- Distinguished by their long flippers and small dorsal fin
- Baleen plates instead of teeth
- Adults reach 14-17m in length and up to 40 metric tons in weight

In the last three photos is the Southern Right Whales:
- Migrate from sub-antarctic waters to mate and give birth
- Known for their acrobatic flips and breaches
- Smaller flippers, but highly agile
- Can 'sail' with the wind using their fluke

From its rocky shores to its sandy expanse, Santos Beach has undergone a breathtaking transformation over the years! Take a journey back in time to 1908 (first photo) and witness the evolution of this coastal gem into what it is today – one of Mossel Bay's cherished beaches.

In the vintage photo, glimpse the old-world charm with the Pavilion, which was built in 1916 by Mr. W. Swart and architect Mr. Harry Davidge-Pitts, standing proudly at the far end of the rocky beach. Fast forward to the present (second photo), and marvel at the smooth sands stretching as far as the eye can see, a testament to the changes in wave action and sea currents influenced by years of harbour construction activities.

Take a closer look and observe how the once-not-so-rocky Santos Beach has transformed into a pristine paradise.

Did you know? In 1959, the Provincial Hospital on Linkside was opened, replacing the Cottage Hospital of 1910. Many current residents of Mossel Bay were born in this historic hospital, marking a significant chapter in the town's healthcare history.

This Building was demolished when the present Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital came into operation around 1960.
