Beyond proud of our very own Dave O’Dell and Scott Little flying the Wild Child flag at the Dusi this past weekend.

Scott and partner .maher placed 1st in the u23 category and came an incredible 5th overall.

Dave took on this adventure with his dad, Pete Odell, and finished strong with a broken boat and a huge smile!

What an incredible weekend spent in Umtata, with and even more incredible team from Operation Smile and Miles For Smiles. Out of a total of 36 children screened on the Friday, all from the Transkei, 22 successfully underwent facial reconstructive surgery over the weekend for cleft lip and/or palate.
What a privilege to not only be in the presence of the most experienced and qualified surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, dental surgeons and volunteers who do it for love, but to play a small part in changing these beautiful children's lives forever.

Thank you to all the wonderful runners, guests and friends that helped this happen through the Pondo Trail and The PONDO Trail-Run this year!

Now here is to getting the other 14 children who weren't strong enough this year, healthy enough so that they too can receive life changing smiles next year! And more!!!!

Sam Speed –
You bloody legend!

Any of our Pondo Trail guests who have had the privilege of being hosted by Sam will no doubt agree that he is one seriously special human. Sam has that incredibly rare ability to meet people at their level. Whether dancing around the fire on the beach at Manteku, helping a struggler with blisters on the bluff, joking with the kids at The Pothole or shooting the breeze with a high powered CEO at the Vultures, Sam can do it all. Countless guests have commented on Sam’s professionalism, his maturity, his passion and knowledge for Pondoland, his friendliness, and quite often...his dashing good looks ;)

Sam departs for Antarctica this week to join some of our other ‘Wild Children’ on ice and in January he leaves our company for a wonderful opportunity in the US.

Sambo, how incredibly fortunate we have been to have you on our team for the past two years. People with your work ethic, your passion, your willingness and your warm and friendly manner are very difficult to find. While we are devastated that you will not be guiding trails in Pondoland next year, we are so excited for you as you take on your next chapter. As with everything you do, you are going to absolutely nail it!

11 Months ago, after applying and being selected into our gap-year mentorship program, a young and somewhat shy teenager reported for duty in Port Edward and was thrown into the deep end of his 1st Pondo Trail. He soon learned where the paths split, where the best crayfish gullies bubbled between the rocks, where the trails to the secret caves lay hidden, where the oysters were fattest and where G&Ts flowed best.

A few months later a fine young man, brimming with confidence and charm, is just about to set out to Antarctica for a season on the ice!

Jamie Hean, you can be so unbelievably proud of what you have achieved this year. The endless praise that we receive about your gentle nature, the care that stragglers continue to receive at the back of pack, is nothing short of inspirational! The love and respect that our ground crew and camp staff have for you mirrors the respect and love that you have for them.

Best of luck on the ice boetie, we are so excited to have you as official part of the team next year.

Wild Child Africa was born out of the unquenchable thirst for adventure of two brothers and their young families, a pure love of nature and the outdoors and a humble effort to live a simple, purposeful and meaningful life.

Matt is no stranger to exploration and adventure having embarked on and led many trips into and around Africa and Antarctica. His love for wildlife and conservation, combined with his knowledge and passion for Africa and particularly the Wild Coast, makes him the perfect adventure companion.

Cam, campfire cuisine extraordinaire and camp manager, is responsible for ensuring the comforts of camp life after every day’s adventure and making the magic at mealtimes. Cam’s knowledge of South Africa’s coastline, having walked the entire 3000km of it from Namibia to Mozambique, combined with her dazzling culinary and 4x4 skills, equip her as the ultimate Pondo ground crew leader where logistical challenges are met on an hourly basis.

Tim, having spent 20 years in education, eight of which as a Headmaster, and having explored the jungles of Cameroon and the glaciers of Antarctica, guided in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya, and fished virtually every piece of African water south of the equator, is the perfect host to ignite your passion for Africa and entertain you with stories about some of its charms. Tim is passionate about leadership and he has lectured on this topic to various audiences over the past few years.
