Artscape Theatre is excited to announce its annual Rural Outreach Concerts, coming to Mamre near Atlantis on the West Coast on the 31st of October and 1st of November 2024 at the Mamre Primary School. This initiative aims to bring high-quality performing arts to rural communities, creating opportunities for cultural enrichment and celebrating local talent, by taking the theatre to the people.

This yearโ€™s outreach concerts boast an incredible lineup of artists from various disciplines, offering a vibrant mix of ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, opera, and more. The programme will feature performances from Cape Town City Ballet, Jazzart Dance Theatre, jazz singer Ncedeka aka N-The Queen, Afrikaaps hip-hop artist Jitsvinger aka Quinton Goliath, including opera singers Janel Speelman and Sipho Qabithole, with Stefan Lombard as musical director. In addition, the event will proudly showcase local talent from Mamre and Atlantis including the Smile Production Band whose members have spread their international wings too as well as wheelchair bound contemporary singer Nikita Scott.

The day concerts will be free for local schools in the area, allowing learners to experience world-class performances and theatre operational requirements such as sound and lighting right in their community. The performance on Friday 1 November at 20:00 will be open to the public. Ticket sales for this concert are in aid of Lief en Leed, a local non-profit organisation run by persons with disabilities for persons living with disabilities.

Lief en Leed has been a pillar of support in Mamre for over 20 years, dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. โ€œThe funds raised will support our vision for a Centre for Excellence, which will provide resources and opportunities not only for people with disabilities but for the broader Mamre community. Lief and Leed has already signed a lease agreement with the Mamre CPA for three hectares of land, at the entrance of Mamre. This Centre will foster inclusion, creativity, and empowerment for all residents,โ€ said chairperson Michael September and secretary Paul Arendse, both living with cerebral palsy, at one of the rehearsals recently.

Says Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux: โ€œAs we celebrate 30 years of democracy it is befitting to note that this project was conceptualised as a conduit to implement our constitution. By using theatre as a tool we enhance social cohesion, dialogue with communities and how we best utilise the arts as a vehicle for inclusivity of all communities, irrespective of language, religion, race or gender. It remains one of my personal calendar highlights to see faces light up and to hear the uproarious applause as learners and adults experience the absolute magic of professional theatre โ€“ often for the first timeโ€.

Structural engineers will arrive this morning to investigate the damage caused by a fire on Thursday, to the parking garage and the administration building at the lower station. The flames did not reach the machinery that operates the cable cars. While the engineers carry out their tests today, we will suspend our cable cars.

We hope to provide an update on when we can resume by late on Friday.

Rugby fans encouraged to use MyCiTi buses and trains to DHL Stadium on Saturday The gees is mounting ahead of Saturday, 7 September 2024, when the Springboks and All Blacks will face off in Cape Town for the first time since 2017. The City of Cape Town wants all fans watching the game at the DHL Stadium to avoid running overtime due to traffic and parking woes. Thus, we are offering a free MyCiTi shuttle service from various points in the city. The train service will also be running from all stations into Cape Town at increased intervals between 11:00 and 16:30 and out of the station between 20:00 and 22:00. The MyCiTi shuttles will start running at 12 midday, departing from the Civic Centre station; Thibault Square; the CTICC; Century City; UCT; and the Green Point Park, bringing fans to the DHL Stadium. The service will be running frequently throughout the day in both directions, with the last shuttles departing the stations at 21:30. The City is pleased to announce that in addition to the MyCiTi shuttle service, rugby supporters can opt to travel part of their journey on Saturday by train. The train service will be running from all stations into Cape Town at increased intervals between 11:00 and 16:30 and out of the station between 20:00 and 22:00. It is a convenient 200m walk between the train station and the MyCiTi Civic Centre Station, so our rugby supporters should be well covered at all points of their journey. Normal train fares apply to all passengers โ€“ please visit www.prasa.com for timetables and park and ride facilities. โ€˜We are delighted and encouraged to collaborate with PRASA Western Cape to further expand the public transport offering for this busy day. FIRE AT BLOUKRANS, TSITSIKAMMA SECTION OF THE GARDEN ROUTE NATIONAL PARK @SANParks A fire which has affected an area of approximately 1 500 hectares has ignited in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park, located north of the Bloukrans Bridge. This fire was caused by a lightning strike. The fire remains inaccessible due to the challenging terrain and efforts to contain it are primarily carried out through counter burns and aerial water bombing. Several counter burns have steered the fire away from commercial plantations and critical infrastructure. The firefighting team is currently conducting a counter-burn, with another one planned for early tomorrow with the weather permitting. The management of the fire is conducted under a Joint Operational Command (JOC) between SANParks, Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (SCFPA) and Mountain to Ocean (MTO) Group, ensuring a coordinated response to the situation. Aerial resources have been deployed and are kept on-site for quick reaction to flare-ups, minimizing ferry costs and ensuring a rapid response. SANParks also confirms that the fire is managed as a controlled burn and not a runaway wildfire. Measures are in place to prevent the fire from spreading uncontrollably and potentially cause damage to property or affect lives. SANParks also urge members of the public to stay clear from the affected areas to allow emergency services to carry out their work without hindrance.
