International Geodiversity Day 2023
UNESCO Global Geoparks host unique geological heritage sites of international significance! Some of these outstanding geological heritage sites in UNESCO Global Geoparks, are included among the 100 first IUGS Geological Heritage Sites, that mark important moments in Earth history and evolution.
The Global Geoparks Network celebrates the International Geodiversity Day 2023 promoting these exceptional sites in collaboration with IUGS and other international initiatives. Collaboration between all international initiatives involved with geoheritage and geodiversity can lead to their further appreciation, to their sustainable use as educational resources, and, most importantly, to their preservation for the good of society, for future generations, and for our Planet’s well-being.
The Global Geoparks Network encourages all 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks to participate in the celebration of the International Geodiversity Day 2023 and organize events with the involvement of their local communities, visitors and local schools!

Happy New Year from the Ries Impact Crater Geopark
Global Geoparks Network
177 warm wishes for a happy New Year, for peace, love, solidarity, creativity, health, happiness, prosperity, networking and success!
Greetings with a view from Ries UNESCO Global Geopark in Germany, one of the youngest members in our Geoparks family!
The Global Geoparks Network
Ries UNESCO Global Geopark (Germany)
Most of the Ries UNESCO Global Geopark area lies in the state of Bavaria, with a smaller part in the state of Baden-Würtemberg comprising the Ries Crater, situated between the Swabian and Franconian Alb in southern Germany. The geopark covers an area of 1,749 km2 with around 162,500 inhabitants. Some 15 million years ago, a meteorite collided with Earth in this very place, leaving an impact crater that is the best-preserved meteorite crater in Europe and the most intensively studied impact structure among the nearly 200 known craters worldwide. Visitors can explore the Nördlinger Ries impact crater and learn about its geology and history by following nature trails which take hikers to scenic outlooks, on their own or on guided tours. Information centres and school programmes are also available. The geopark provides an intriguing insight into the Earth’s history through its unique natural landscape, cultural and culinary history.
