Happy UNESCO International Day of Education! We have such wonderful news for education in Plett!
The Hands On Foundation Charitable Trust to build a Technical Engineering & Design Faculty at Wittedrift High School. Saul Berman is a man on a mission! A man with a passion for education and helping children in South Africa achieve that aim, especially within the scope of Technical studies, an area in the curriculum largely ignored by mainstream schools.
In February 2025, ground will be broken at the second of his trailblazing school initiatives at Wittedrift High School, with building taking place in earnest throughout the year, planning for the Technical Engineering Faculty to be opened in November 2025, with learners enrolling from 2026.
Here, Saul Berman’s academic dream became a brick and mortar reality when in February 2020, the Technical Engineering Faculty opened its doors to students.
This follows the successful pilot project having taken place at Wynberg Boys High School.

CapeNature Senior Marine Ranger, Chanel Visser, addresses safety measures in response to seal rabies in Plettenberg Bay
Press Release / Public Service Announcement in conjunction with the Bitou Municipality, CapeNature and the Plett Tourism Association.
As a beach destination in South Africa, Plettenberg Bay is arguably one of the most attractive. However, the recent discovery of rabies in Cape fur seals along the south and western Cape coastlines of South Africa has raised questions among residents and holidaymakers.
To address this, Bitou Municipality, Plett Tourism and CapeNature have issued this statement to clarify what this means for Plett’s beaches this summer and actions to be taken by the public to mitigate any unfortunate encounter and ensure a safe and enjoyable season for all. Bitou Municipality Environmental Manager, Anje Minne, reassures beachgoers that “Bitou’s local beaches remain safe for recreational use, despite the recent discovery of rabies in Cape Fur seals.”
In June 2024, a rabies outbreak was detected in South African Cape fur seals, a species in which rabies had not been recorded previously. To date, positive samples have originated from the South African coast between Yzerfontein, on the West Coast, around Cape Town and along the coast to Plettenberg Bay. Plettenberg Bay has had four confirmed cases of rabies and one suspected case amongst a population of approximately 8000.
Since the identification in Plett, Bitou Municipality has been involved in the National Rabies-Response workshop, which took place in July 2024 and has put systems in place for quick and safe seal carcass removals. The municipality has trained all employees on a standard operating procedure and urges the public to follow simple steps to avoid the risk of exposure and enjoy Plett’s beautiful beaches in comfort. Local stakeholders are actively involved including Plett Shark Spotters, Bitou lifeguards, NSRI, first responders, local doctors, stranding networks, marine tourism companies, law enforcement, CapeNature, SANParks, Bitou Municipality and local conservation NGOs who hav
