Welcome to Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay is a premier holiday destination situated on the Southern Cape coast of South Africa. Plett, as it is popularly known, has sweeping golden beaches, the iconic Robberg Peninsula, intriguing lagoons and estuaries, towering indigenous forests and unpolluted rivers, vineyards and wine estates. Known as “Bahia Formosa” (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese expl

orers, the “Plett feeling” is easy to experience. With its moderate climate and beautiful vistas over the Indian Ocean, Plett’s about lazy sun-filled beach holidays (on any one of our six Blue Flag beaches) and activities ranging from adrenaline to leisure. This includes hiking, mountain biking, abseiling, bungy jumping, sky diving, marine safaris, boutique shopping and wine tasting. You’ll be spoilt for choice with some of SA’s award-winning restaurants, wine farms and other lifestyle experiences. Plett is home to wildlife sanctuaries, game reserves, whale and dolphin watching, birding, canoeing and kayaking, sailing … and so much more. Situated between the hills covered with indigenous Fynbos and the Bitou River is the tranquil and rural village of Wittedrift, a bird and nature lover’s paradise. From Keurboomstrand to the Robberg Peninsula there are 15 kilometers of beaches punctuated by the river mouth and an island. The river, lagoon, bay and beaches are much used by fishing and boating enthusiasts and offer the best shore based whale watching of the area. The Crags is situated 20 kilometers from Plett central and has become one of the must see areas, with polo fields, wildlife sanctuaries, theatre and an abundance of art and craft offerings along its vibrant ‘Cruise the Crags‘ route. And once there, head down the scenic R102 to tranquil Nature’s Valley with its untouched indigenous trees, forest and beautiful pristine coastline for a glimpse of historical beauty. Further down the N2, nestled in the great forests lying at the feet of the fabled Tsitsikamma mountains is the quaint hamlet of Storms River offering teeming bird life, vast expanses of Cape flora, delicate eco-systems in wetlands and lagoons, gigantic trees and adrenaline pumping activities such as the world’s highest bungee jump and tree canopy tours. Whatever you choose, make sure to take advantage of all the Plett has to offer to experience that “Plett feeling”. Congratulations to Plett favourites, Plett Villas on celebrating 25 years in business!
David, Linda, and their team hosted a wonderful evening celebrating Plett Villas 25th Birthday at Down to Earth Restaurant on the banks of the Bitou River: “They say it takes a village to raise a child; well it takes a village to raise a business too. Thank you to all those who joined us and those that wished us well,” said Linda Packwood.

Plett Villas has grown organically over the years. Their holiday rental division has gained a reputation of high-quality holiday rental properties and service and the business has expanded to include Plett Weddings and Plett Film which are both growing tourism industry sectors on the Garden Route.

For Plett Villas, it made sense – with their network of properties and connection with holidaymakers eager to settle or invest in the area – to develop the Real Estate division by bringing expert property practitioner, Debbie De Lange onboard.

Wow - 15 years of international Blue Flag beach status for Robberg 5 Beach & 10 years for Lookout Beach! This year, Plett has retained a wonderful eight Blue Flags for the 2024/2025 season and the coveted Green Coast Awards for Nature's Valley for a 2nd year! Thank you, WESSA Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa and Blue Flag, and especially Bitou Municipality for your dedication to one of our most precious assets! Congratulations to Offshore Adventures for two Blue Flag boat awards!
Plettenberg Bay has been awarded 8 international Blue Flag Awards for the 2024/2025 season and a Green Coast Award for Nature’s Valley at the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Blue flag and Green Coast Awards.

“Life in Plett revolves around enjoying our beautiful natural surroundings: the ocean, the beaches, the forests and mountains. That’s why we fight so fiercely to protect them. This vision is shared with our local Bitou Municipality, our marine activities and conservation initiatives,” says Patty Butterworth, CEO of Plett Tourism.

The coveted Blue Flag status is one of the world’s most recognisable voluntary eco labels awarded to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. Plett received full Blue Flag status for six of its beaches – Robberg 5, The Waves, Nature’s Valley, Lookout, The Dunes and Singing Kettle – and seal-swimming operator Offshore Adventures for its two boats. To qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained. Robberg 5 and Lookout beaches received special awards celebrating 15 and 10 years, respectively, in the Blue Flag programme which serves to highlight Bitou’s long standing commitment to excellence.

Blue Flags and a Green Coast accolade have been awarded to Plettenberg Bay for the 2024/2025 season. Six beaches and two boats were awarded.

A GOOD READ | A Flock of Success - Bitou Birding Festival Takes Flight 🦉🪶🦩
What started as a dream to celebrate bird life and conservation blossomed into a well-supported event that drew in not only local enthusiasts but also birders from afar.
Visitors travelled from Gauteng and Plett even welcomed international guests from the Netherlands! This enthusiastic turnout underscored the growing interest in birding tourism and highlighted just how much people care about our feathered friends.
With over 460 tickets sold, we were thrilled to see more than 250 unique participants immersing themselves in all things bird-related. Some joined us for multiple events throughout the week, making the most of our wide array of birding activities. The birding walks were particularly popular, attracting many birders eager to explore the beautiful and diverse habitats of the Bitou region. Expert talks also captured attention, with topics like Birds and Raptors of the Bitou, Black Oystercatcher research, the Health Benefits of Birding, the success stories of our local conservation groups, and climate change’s impacts on bird populations.

The Dr. Evil Experience delivers - rain or shine. What would September in Plett be without smiling mountain bikers about town - sometimes muddy and battered but always smiling!
The doctor’s orders for a mountain bike stage race stipulate the controllables – like smooth logistics, great food, and a thrilling route – but even Dr Evil cannot control the weather. Despite Leon Evans’ anti-rain dances (done in private of course), the 2024 Dr Evil Experience endured two rain-affected days. Mountain bikers are not made of sugar however and the weather conditions did not dampen the riders’ spirits.

Dr Evil MTB stage race endured two days of rain. Tom Byron won Solo Men’s and Robyn Hewlett took overall first in the women's category.
