Then SA Rugby dropped a bombshell: 80 players are now in the mix for Bok selection. That’s not a squad; that’s an army.

Something big is brewing in South African rugby, and it’s not just another World Cup cycle. When the Springboks wrapped up 2024 with their best win record in over a decade, it felt like Rassie Erasmus had cracked the code for long-term dominance. Winning World Cups is the ultimate goal, but the Boks have made it clear—they don’t just want to peak every four years; they want sustained success, trophies in between, and a dynasty to rival the great All Blacks of the past.

In 2024, South Africa won 11 out of 13 matches, clinched the Rugby Championship, and did it while fielding 50 players and playing a more expansive game. It looked like a perfect setup for 2025—a refined squad, a clearer playing style, and a push toward 2027. Then SA Rugby dropped a bombshell: 80 players are now in the mix for Bok selection. That’s not a squad; that’s an army.

Erasmus isn’t done experimenting. Two separate alignment camps—one with 55 domestic players and another virtual camp for 26 overseas-based stars—show that squad rotation will remain a priority. This isn’t just about depth; it’s about future-proofing the team. The 2019 and 2023 World Cup-winning core is aging, and Erasmus has to strike the right balance between experience and youth. Looking at the squad’s age breakdown, a pattern emerges—13 players are already 33 or older, meaning many of them won’t make it to 2027.

Some big names could be phased out soon. Faf de Klerk barely featured after the Ireland series last year, while Trevor Nyakane played just one Test. Willie le Roux, Makazole Mapimpi, and Vincent Koch have been pillars of Bok rugby, but all will be 37 or older by the next World Cup. Erasmus knows he can’t take them all, and the transition has to start now. On the flip side, youngsters like Gerhard Steenekamp and Elrigh Louw grabbed their chances in 2024, proving that the future is already knocking on the door.

The forward pack is in decent shape, but the Boks need fresh blood in key areas. With Steven Kitshoff’s retirement, Steenekamp becomes crucial at loosehead prop. At tighthead, new faces like Neethling Fouché and Asenathi Ntlabakanye are expected to step up. Erasmus is planning for every scenario—seven tightheads and eight hookers are in consideration because he knows injuries can derail a campaign, just like the flyhalf crisis in 2022.

The depth in the backline is also getting attention. Young stars like Jaden Hendrikse and Canan Moodie are already World Cup winners and could be around for the next three tournaments. But it’s not just about replacing veterans—it’s about ensuring the next generation is ready when the torch gets passed. Erasmus isn’t just thinking about 2027; he’s thinking beyond that.

With such a massive squad, rotation will be inevitable in 2025. The schedule offers opportunities to experiment, especially against Italy, Georgia, and possibly Argentina. But Erasmus has made it clear—there’s no A team or B team. Instead, he’s building a squad that can adapt to different challenges, just like in 2024, when he used over 35 players to win the Rugby Championship.

The real tests will come in high-stakes games. South Africa hasn’t won in Dublin since 2012 and has struggled against Ireland in recent years. Beating France in Paris, after last year’s dramatic World Cup quarter-final, will also be a statement. And then there’s Eden Park—a fortress where the Boks haven’t won in almost a century. Can this evolving squad finally break that curse?

Tony Brown’s arrival as attack coach has already added new dimensions to the Boks’ game, but there’s still room for growth. If 2024 was just the beginning, 2025 could be the season where we see South Africa truly unlock their attacking potential while maintaining their traditional power game.

The stage is set, the squad is deep, and the possibilities are endless. Can the Springboks maintain their momentum, conquer their demons in Dublin and Auckland, and set the tone for a historic World Cup three-peat? Time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—predicting Erasmus’ next move is a fool’s game.
