Ganvie: The Floating Village of Benin Republic

Ganvie is a unique village located in the West African country of Benin. What makes it so unique is that it is situated entirely on water. Often referred to as the "Venice of Africa," Ganvie is home to around 20,000 people and has a long history dating back to the 16th century.

Ganvie was founded by the Tofinu people who were looking to escape the slave trade that was rampant in the region at the time. Legend has it that the Tofinu people were inspired to build their village on the water after seeing a vision of a serpent that instructed them to settle in a lake. This is why the village is sometimes called "the village on stilts."

The village is situated near Cotonou on Lake Nokoué, which is the largest lake in Benin. The Tofinu people constructed their homes and businesses on stilts that rise above the water, creating a network of canals that serve as the village's main transportation system. The villagers use canoes to navigate around the village, and visitors can take boat tours to explore the waterways.

Despite its unusual location, Ganvie is a thriving community with its own schools, markets, and places of worship. The people of Ganvie rely heavily on fishing for their livelihood, and many of the homes in the village have fish farms beneath them. The villagers also cultivate crops such as maize, cassava, and vegetables on small plots of land.

Tourism is a significant industry in Ganvie, with visitors coming from all over the world to experience the unique lifestyle of the village. However, the village's popularity has also led to some challenges, such as overcrowding and pollution of the lake. Efforts are being made to address these issues, such as the construction of a waste management system and regulations on boat traffic in the village.

For those who yet to visit Benin there is no doubt that , Ganvie is a fascinating and vibrant village that offers a glimpse into a way of life that is unlike any other. Its history, culture, and location on the water make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting Benin

Africa is widely considered to be the cradle of ancient civilization. This is due to a range of archaeological and historical evidence that suggests that some of the earliest civilizations in the world developed on the African continent. In this essay, I will present the evidence that supports the theory that Africa is the cradle of ancient civilization.

Firstly, the Nile River Valley in Egypt is widely recognized as one of the cradles of ancient civilization. Ancient Egyptian civilization dates back to around 3100 BC and is considered to be one of the earliest and most advanced civilizations in the world. The ancient Egyptians developed a complex society with advanced architecture, writing systems, mathematics, and astronomy.

Secondly, ancient Nubia (present-day Sudan) is another important cradle of ancient civilization in Africa. The ancient Nubian kingdom of Kush flourished between 2000 BC and 350 AD, and was known for its advanced iron-working technology, architecture, and art. The Nubian civilization also played a significant role in the development of ancient Egypt, with Nubian pharaohs ruling over Egypt during the 25th dynasty (760-656 BC).

Thirdly, the ancient civilization of Ethiopia is another important example of the cradle of ancient civilization in Africa. The ancient Ethiopian civilization of Axum dates back to the 1st century AD and was known for its advanced architecture, engineering, and trading network. Axum was also one of the first Christian civilizations in the world, and played an important role in the spread of Christianity in Africa.

Fourthly, the ancient West African kingdom of Ghana is another important example of the cradle of ancient civilization in Africa. The Ghanaian kingdom flourished between the 6th and 13th centuries AD, and was known for its advanced gold-mining technology, trade network, and political organization.

Lastly, the ancient East African civilization of the Swahili coast is another example of the cradle of ancient civilization in Africa. The Swahili civilization emerged in the 7th century AD and was known for its advanced trade network, art, and architecture.

In conclusion, the evidence presented in this essay supports the theory that Africa is the cradle of ancient civilization. The Nile River Valley in Egypt, ancient Nubia, ancient Ethiopia, the West African kingdom of Ghana, and the Swahili coast are all important examples of the advanced civilizations that developed on the African continent. These civilizations were known for their advanced technology, architecture, trade networks, and cultural contributions to the world.

04/04/2023

Thomas Fuller the African maths genius also known as "Negro Tom" and the "Virginia Calculator", was an enslaved African born in today Benin 🇧🇯 1710 and died in 1790 USA renowned for his mathematical abilities. Also known as a mental calculator.

shipped to America as a slave in 1724. He had remarkable powers of calculation, and late in his life was discovered by antislavery campaigners who used him as a demonstration that blacks were superior not inferior to whites in academics.

In this report, Rush stressed the credibility of Hartshorne and Coates. Rush retold how Hartshorne and Coates tested Fuller's mathematical abilities as follows:

First. Upon being asked, how many seconds there are in a year and a half, he answered in about two minutes, 47,304,000.

Second. On being asked how many seconds a man has lived, who is seventy years, seven- teen days and twelve hours old, he answered, in a minute and a half, 2,210,500,800.

One of the gentlemen, who employed himself with his pen in making these calculations, told him he was wrong, and that the sum was not so great as he had said-upon which the old man hastily replied, “top, massa, you forget de leap year.” On adding the seconds of the leap years to the others, the amount of the whole in both their sums agreed exactly.

Third. The following question was then proposed to him: suppose a farmer has six sows, and each sow has six female pigs, the first year, and they all increase in the same proportion, to the end of eight years, how many sows will the farmer then have? In ten minutes, he answered, 34,588,806. The difference of time between his answering this, and the two former questions, was occasioned by a trifling mistake he made from a misapprehension of the question.

Despite Fuller's perfect answers, it appeared to Hartshorne and Coates that his mental abilities must have once been greater. Rush wrote:

He was grey-headed, and exhibited several other marks of the weakness of old age. He had worked hard upon a farm during the whole of life but had never been intemperate in the use of spirituous liquors. He spoke with great respect of his mistress, and mentioned in a particular manner his obligations to her for refusing to sell him, which she had been tempted to by offers of large sums of money from several persons. One of the gentlemen, Mr. Coates, having remarked in his presence that it was a pity he had not an education equal to his genius, he said, "No, Massa, it is best I had no learning, for many learned men be great fools."

No one could challenge his abilities in mathematics.
