We’re over the moon! The lovely STAMPEDE and her crew consistently raised the heaviest bag of four Yellowfin tuna at the prestigious PEDSAC TUNA CLASSIC, to win the TOP BOAT 2023, which, amongst a field of 36 very capable boats, not an easy feat.
STAMPEDE was built to be a high performance, versatile, family tuna hunting / day cruiser. Her ideal playground, the tuna grounds 40Nm / 75km south along the continental shelf of Africa where the current flows around 7km/h, water is 27C hot and 1000m deep. For that she needed to be exceptionally strong, very light, (the lightest SUPERCAT ever produced in 38ft), bone dry on deck for comfort and safety, boasting stability second to none, achieved by gorgeous slim 11.7m / 38ft hulls and a 5m / 16ft beam. She’s turned out exceptional in every way possible.
STAMPEDE needed an equally amazing crew on and off the water to perform optimally, she couldn’t have wished for better than :
Jamie “Hawk eyes” Edward
Arjan “Nicks meer raad, net nog KRAG!” Floor.
Francois “First” Colyn
Liesel “Emmer” Floor
Chantelle “Marvel” Fourie
Anton “fishon” Van Der Berg
Jacques “Gees” Fourie
Illana “Tropicana” de la Rey
John “Staadmaker” Raffan
Robbie “Fixalot” Francis
“Mello” Danielo Snyman
Dawn “Vasbyd” Francis
At the start of day one, armed with the knowledge that STAMPEDE hasn’t blanked since the start of tuna season we should have felt more confident. However Jan, Feb, March, April, and Mays fish now counted for nothing. We needed to once again find Goldilocks water, not too hot/not too cold, rediscover the fish, raise them from the deep, and entice them to bite properly before the fight can even begin. Then all the chaos and challenges we sought could commence, connected to possibly 8 of the oceans top athletes by the slimmest of lines. Until we had one or two on ice we would suffer the frenzy of the million butterfly’s now residing within all of us.
On Day one we headed to the area we believed we stood the best chance at success, based on the prevailing conditions and forecast. We picked up Skipjack tuna along the way, a good sign, “we're on the right track” of the some times elusive Yellowfin tuna, "just a little deeper."
We received a call over the radio, another boat landed the first of the day and along with it a cash prize, my heart sank.
Moments later two of our reels started screaming and our crew sprang into action. After some time, gaff in hand I started to see the familiar vibrant yellow signature of our quarry, both fish were soon landed and iced.
The first by Francois, the second hot on his heels by Chantelle not messing around. As luck would have it the other boats “first fish” transpired to be a case of mistaken identity, the honour and cash of First Fish belonged to our Francois. As it turned out, wasn’t just the first of the day but for Francois his first Yellowfin
ever, no better way to remember the occasion than the fish of your dreams to be accompanied by a prize in a prestigious competition.
We proceeded to land many more with very few losses. Day one ended neck and neck with only 2kg separating the TOP 8 boats STAMPEDE included, our crew now needed rest, it was anyone’s competition.
Day two was cancelled due to sea conditions. If possible the crew wanted to fish regardless. Sea conditions allowed one Yellowfin and a few losses. The time drew near for us to navigate the waters back to port to maintain comfort. Stampede harnessed the power of the swell to minimise our fuel burn and reduce our carbon footprint and made excellent time returning to port having a proper adventure
and yellow gold in the ice box. With the rest of the fleet having a leisure day, we would need to dig extra deep tomorrow.
The second official day started with visibility lower than expected, intermittent squalls and clouds delayed the sun. Boats started turning around back to port, as the sea still lay hungover and messy from the previous day’s strong winds. Radio calls started coming in from around 6 miles further south,
conditions were beginning to improve for them. Hopeful boats were now turning back south again and soon caught up to us. We once again arrived south on time to raise the first Yellowfin of the official second day and the accompanying prize, followed by even more. That afternoon we left early to ensure
we made the scales comfortably, to see who got what and to celebrate with the rest of the fleet as it was yet again another Tuna Classic to remember.
We weighed our beautiful Yellowfins and prize giving began. To our delight STAMPEDE ended up around 75kg ahead of the closest competitor to receive the award of PEDSAC TUNA CLASSIC TOP BOAT 2023.
Absolute privilege to fish amongst legends from near and far. Gaffing the win, a feather in our cap.
Fishing is the strangest game, competition is fierce yet social. Connected by the sailors code we unite to share adventures unlike any other and the mysteries of the deep bring us back to the shelf time and time again.
PEDSAC TUNA CLASSIC will always be a highlight on STAMPEDE’s calendar.
Many thanks to sponsors, organisers and the brave competitors. Till next year...
