Especially in our industry, we meet some fantastic people along the way. Besides our tourism colleagues of course, I am particularly referring to our clients or 'guests' if I may, who become part of our success and often share private details about their lives and travels. Sometimes it is just brief interactions while doing their transfers other times more intimate connections while we take them on tour. Dereck Beech was one of those dear, dear people along with his charming wife Lesley, that we were blessed to meet and become friends with well after their departure from SA. Today though we share with a heavy heart the passing of Dereck. Rest well dear Dereck! Such a pleasure to have spent time with you and know you. Our love and deepest condolences to Lesley and family. 😞💐❤️‍🩹

A Walk Along Sundays River: Discovering Nature in Colchester

I’ll start with a small apology: the photos aren’t great! My camera and I are in the middle of a disagreement, and no amount of cleaning seems to shift these persistent little marks on the lens. But determined not to let that stop me, I took a few shots while enjoying a peaceful walk at Pearson Park Resort on the banks of the Sundays River in Colchester. The weather couldn’t have been better for a riverside wander. Along the banks, fishermen and fisherwomen were making the most of the morning, casting lines in the hopes of catching something fresh for an afternoon “braai.” I, however, was more than happy to leave the fishing to the pros.

The Sundays River, with its green, lush banks cutting through the rugged Eastern Cape, feels like a vibrant, living artery connecting the land to the sea. Originating from the snowy peaks of the Sneeuberg Mountains near Graaff-Reinet, this river takes an epic journey southward, winding gracefully through the Zuurberg Mountains before it reaches the Indian Ocean at Algoa Bay. It’s an essential lifeline here, supplying water to a vast region that sustains both wildlife and communities alike. This river forms part of the Fish to Tsitsikamma Water Management Area and is as vital to the area as it is scenic.

Just along its banks, the small riverside village of Colchester offers a blissful escape from city life. Only a short drive from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Colchester opens up a world of outdoor adventure. Here, you can take a leisurely river cruise to enjoy the peaceful landscapes or, for the more adventurous, try sandboarding down massive dunes nearby. Birdwatchers can expect a vibrant show of bird life, while nature lovers can easily arrange wildlife tours to the Greater Addo Elephant National Park.

A short distance away lies the awe-inspiring Alexandria Dunefields, a vast stretch of golden sand that feels almost otherworldly. These dunes cover 142 square kilometres and reach up to a staggering 140 metres in height, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views. It’s a true wilderness where adventurous spirits can hike along trails that reveal the dunes’ hidden wonders. The ecosystem here is home to a surprising variety of wildlife, including the elusive dune gerbil, bush pigs, vervet monkeys, and countless bird species.

Beyond the dunes lies another remarkable part of Addo’s conservation story, the Marine Protected Area (MPA) along the coastline. Under the protection of Addo Elephant National Park, this MPA is a vital sanctuary for marine life, preserving habitats for endangered African penguins, whales, and dolphins. This marine area ensures that coastal and oceanic life is protected, contributing to the park's mission of safeguarding natural habitats from land to sea.

This was a day for slowing down, taking in the sounds of nature, and letting the landscape work its magic. Next time, I’ll have to go sandboarding or perhaps try my hand at a river cruise.

Pause and Reflect: A Journey Through Cradock and the Karoo

Can time stand still? Yes, it can—if you allow it. And there’s no better place to experience this stillness than in the magical, often overlooked Karoo region of the Eastern Cape. A few months ago, we found ourselves journeying through the charming town of Cradock (Nxuba), where history, hospitality, and natural beauty intertwine effortlessly.

A Town with a Soulful History
Cradock, established in 1814, is steeped in history and literary heritage. This unassuming town is renowned for its everyday warmth and hospitality, welcoming visitors with open arms. Its well-preserved Victorian architecture offers a glimpse into a bygone era, while the streets seem to hum with stories from the past.

The town also holds a special place in South African literary history, being the birthplace of authors like Olive Schreiner, whose novel ‘The Story of an African Farm’ remains a landmark of South African literature. Walking the streets of Cradock feels like following in the footsteps of these literary legends.

The Mountain Zebra National Park: A Natural Treasure
Cradock serves as the gateway to the nearby Mountain Zebra National Park, a hidden gem established in 1937 to protect the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra. The park offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature with activities ranging from birdwatching to exhilarating cheetah tracking.

Beyond wildlife, the park’s scenic beauty is a sight to behold. Rolling hills, rugged cliffs, and endless vistas create a sense of peace that lingers long after your visit. It’s a place where the modern world feels distant, and nature takes over, reminding you to slow down and savour every moment.

A Step Back in Time: Die Tuishuise and Victoria Manor
During our visit, we visited Die Tuishuise and Victoria Manor, a collection of beautifully restored Victorian-era guest houses along historic Market Street. The street leads to the grand Victoria Manor Hotel, which dates back to 1848. Each cottage is uniquely decorated with antique furniture and period prints, reflecting the lifestyles of the English and Dutch settlers of the time.

The combination of historic charm and modern comfort makes a stay here feel like stepping back in time—but with all the conveniences of today. The manor itself exudes elegance, with its high ceilings and spacious rooms creating a sense of grandeur. It’s not just history you’re walking through—it’s history you can see, touch, and feel in every corner.

If Walls Could Talk...
As we strolled through the halls and rooms, we couldn’t help but wonder: if these walls could talk, what tales would they tell? What stories of joy, sorrow, or celebration are hidden within these weathered buildings? Each house, every room, seems to hold its own personality—a unique soul waiting to be discovered by curious travellers.

A Place to Pause and Reconnect
In Cradock, time seems to slow down, allowing you to pause, reflect, and reconnect with life’s simpler pleasures. The town’s rich cultural heritage, combined with its warm hospitality, makes it an ideal destination for anyone seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Whether you're exploring the history-laden streets, tracking cheetahs in the Mountain Zebra National Park, or unwinding in one of the quaint cottages along Market Street, Cradock offers an experience that lingers in your heart long after you’ve left.

Time may not truly stand still—but in Cradock, it certainly feels like it does.

Escape to Pabala: A Day of Honey, Gin, and Wildlife Adventure

Earlier this week, we swapped the city buzz for fresh air and wide-open spaces, joining other tourism professionals for a day of relaxation and discovery at Pabala Private Nature Reserve . Tucked away near Hankey in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, this hidden gem offers the perfect mix of nature, local flavours, and wildlife encounters.

A Scenic Start through the Gamtoos Valley

The adventure began with a beautiful drive through the Gamtoos Valley. The rolling hills, lush farmlands, and endless greenery gave us a sneak peek of the tranquillity that lay ahead. With every kilometre, the hum of city life faded, replaced by the peaceful rhythm of nature.

Sweet Beginnings: Honey Tasting Experience

Our first stop at Pabala was as sweet as it gets—a honey-tasting experience. Guided by knowledgeable hosts, we learned about the fascinating world of bees, their role in maintaining ecosystems, and how their environment influences the taste of honey. Each sample was unique, drawing flavours from the indigenous plants that thrive within the reserve. This interactive session gave us a deeper appreciation for both the bees and their golden nectar—and yes, we all left with a new favourite honey!

A Light Lunch with Scenic Views

With our taste buds awakened, we moved on to a light lunch served at the Farmstall in the heart of the reserve. As we ate, we soaked in the beauty of the Eastern Cape's landscapes, feeling completely recharged for the afternoon ahead.

Raise a Glass: Gin Tasting with Indigenous Botanicals

After lunch, it was time to unwind with a gin-tasting experience that truly celebrated the spirit of the Eastern Cape. Guided by local experts, we sampled craft gins infused with indigenous botanicals. The variety of flavours was impressive, with each sip offering a new layer of complexity. We mixed and matched tonics and garnishes, creating personalised drinks while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and breathtaking views.

Into the Wild: Afternoon Game Drive

No visit to Pabala would be complete without a game drive, and ours was unforgettable. We explored the reserve's unique blend of mountain terrain and fynbos landscapes. Along the way, we encountered a variety of wildlife, each sighting adding excitement to the journey.

A Perfect Escape

Our day at Pabala Private Nature Reserve was everything we hoped for a chance to reconnect with nature, indulge in local flavours, and experience the magic of the African bush. Whether you're a nature lover, a foodie, or simply in need of a peaceful escape, Pabala offers it all.

Exploring Tsitsikamma’s Dendrite Pseudofossils and Ancient Caves

On a recent visit to the stunning Storms River Suspension Bridge in Tsitsikamma National Park, my daughter and one of our guests spotted something intriguing—a pattern in the rocks that looked like a fossilised plant. The steep walk to the bridge was well worth it, especially for moments like this, when nature surprises you with its artful creations. If the hike doesn’t leave you tempted to phone for a helicopter rescue, take on the next challenge: climbing the steep stairs above the bridge to explore a hidden cave. These natural wonders offer more than just a scenic view; they provide a window into the region's geological and human history.

Dendrite Pseudofossils: Nature's Own Artwork

What looked like a fossilized plant turned out to be a dendrite pseudofossil—a natural formation that mimics the appearance of ancient plant fossils but is not biological in origin. These tree-like, branching patterns are created by the crystallisation of minerals, typically manganese oxides, along cracks and bedding planes in rocks. Over time, these minerals seep into the rock, forming intricate fern-like shapes.

At first glance, these patterns can easily be mistaken for plant fossils, especially in an environment so rich in natural history. However, they are purely the result of chemical processes. Dendrites can form in various rock types, including limestone and sandstone. In the case of the Storms River area, they are found in the Table Mountain Sandstone that dominates the region. The sandstone’s hard, layered structure, carved by years of erosion from waves and rivers, creates the perfect canvas for these stunning formations.

Ancient Inhabitants of the Tsitsikamma Coastline

Beyond its geological marvels, the Tsitsikamma coastline is steeped in history. The caves nestled into the rugged cliffs were once home to indigenous peoples, particularly the San and Khoikhoi. These early hunter-gatherers thrived in this region, using the caves as shelter and for food storage. The coastline, rich in marine life and natural resources, provided an ideal environment for these communities.

Archaeological evidence—such as stone tools and shell middens—has been found in caves along the coast, revealing how these early inhabitants lived and adapted to their surroundings. The Tsitsikamma caves played a crucial role in prehistoric human habitation, offering protection from the elements while being strategically located near abundant resources.

The Dramatic Tsitsikamma Coastline

The Tsitsikamma National Park, part of the broader Cape Supergroup, is renowned for its rugged beauty. The Table Mountain Sandstone that forms the cliffs and gorges around the Storms River Suspension Bridge is ancient. Over millennia, ocean waves and river currents have eroded this quartzitic sandstone, creating the steep, dramatic landscapes we see today. These rock formations, with their weathered layers and fractured appearance, add to the wild beauty of the area.

Visiting the Storms River Suspension Bridge is more than just a hike—it’s a journey through time. From the dendrite pseudofossils that hint at ancient chemical processes to the caves that echo the history of early human life, the landscape tells countless stories. So, if you find yourself standing in awe of the scenery, remember that you’re not just witnessing nature's beauty; you’re walking through history.

Next time you visit Tsitsikamma, keep an eye out for these hidden gems in the rocks. You never know what stories the cliffs might be telling.

Spring Adventures in Nature: A Day at Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve

As part of Spring and Tourism Month, I decided to head out to the Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve just outside Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Saturday was the perfect day for it, as the reserve was hosting its annual Indigenous Plant Sale. I craved a good dose of nature and couldn’t resist the chance to explore, camera in hand, ready to capture some of the natural beauty.

For the brave souls, the day kicked off with a 5km or 15km Green Flag trail run through the reserve. While I admire their energy, I chose a more laid-back, yet informative approach by joining two of the guided hikes on offer. I’ve always been more of a slow-wander-through-nature type, soaking in the sights and learning along the way.

The Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve, about 35km from Gqeberha, is a 500-hectare floral wonderland located at the gateway to the Garden Route. It's a perfect stopover for travellers looking to unwind before hitting the road again. The reserve features diverse terrains, from southern wooded slopes to expansive plateaus and lush northern riverbanks, each with its own unique vegetation.

🌱The Beauty of Fynbos

One of the things that makes Van Stadens so special is the Fynbos. This type of vegetation is indigenous to the Western and Eastern Cape and is considered one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. The Fynbos biome is home to thousands of plant species, including proteas, ericas, and restios, many of which can only be found here. Some species are endangered and are a key focus of conservation efforts in the region.

Fynbos is incredibly important, not just for its beauty, but because it plays a huge role in maintaining our ecosystems. These plants are adapted to survive tough conditions like droughts and fires, and they help protect the soil from erosion. They also provide food and shelter for a wide variety of animals and insects, including the critically important Cape sugarbird, which pollinates many of the plants.

🚶‍♂️‍➡️Trails to Explore

Feeling inspired, I started with the 3 Dam Trail, a relaxing 1.5km walk that loops around three picturesque dams. This route is perfect for anyone looking for an easy stroll with some lovely photo ops.

Next, I took on the Nymph Trail, a 3km moderate hike offering a mix of open landscapes and wooded sections. You can combine this with the Forest Walk if you’re up for more of a challenge. Speaking of which, the Forest Walk itself is a 4.5km trek through the stunning Van Stadens River Forest, where you can spot local trees like the Atalaya capensis and the rare Sterculia alexandri.

For the more experienced hikers, the River Walk might be right up your alley. This 4km trail follows the contours of the Van Stadens River, offering views of steep slopes covered in fascinating plants like the Encephalartos longifolius and the Cyrtanthus staadensis. It's a little more challenging, but the scenery makes it well worth the effort.

🌄A Day Well Spent

After my hikes, I wandered through the Indigenous Plant Sale, got myself a refreshing drink from the beer tent, and enjoyed some live music from one of my favourite local artists, Claire Venn. It was heartwarming to see so many people excited about supporting local flora and learning about the importance of preserving these species.

Van Stadens is more than just a stopover; it’s a nature lover’s paradise. Whether you're running trails, taking a relaxing walk, or snapping photos of the incredible landscapes, there's something for everyone here. If you haven’t visited yet, now’s the perfect time to pack a picnic, lace up your hiking boots, and immerse yourself in the spring beauty of this floral gem.

Have you ever truly gazed into an elephant's eye?

There's something ancient and profound in that moment, a silent exchange that transcends words. You can see wisdom shaped by centuries with the weight of experience carried through generations. You see intelligence, empathy, and perhaps even sorrow, a reflection of the world we've fashioned, both beautiful and broken.

What do you think they see when they look at us?

Sweet Escapes: A Honey Adventure at Pabala Private Nature Reserve

The only reason for being a bee is to make honey. And the only reason for making honey is so I can eat it.” – Winnie the Pooh. Wise words, right? But what happens when you’re down to the last sticky spoonful of your favourite honey, and you know your French toast will never taste the same without it?

They say the best honey is local honey. Something about getting all the natural goodness from the plants around you. Well, when it comes to honey, there’s only one place I trust, and lucky for me, it’s just a scenic 40-minute drive out of town along the beautiful R331. I’m talking about the Farmstall at Pabala Private Nature Reserve, tucked away near Hankey in the Eastern Cape.

The honey at Pabala? It’s pure magic. The bees are busy gathering nectar from the local fynbos, aloes, and a whole host of other plants—over 1,100 species, to be exact. This means the honey is organic, free-roaming (like the bees), and packed with all the natural goodness you can imagine. It tastes as fresh and wild as the nature that surrounds it.

But let me tell you, the real highlight of the trip isn’t just the honey—it's the lunch at the little on-site restaurant. The menu’s simple, no fancy dishes you can’t pronounce, which makes it perfect for everyone, including picky eaters and, yes, even the mother-in-law! The staff? Super friendly. And for the kiddos, there’s a play area where they can run wild while you relax and take in the views.

For us grown-ups, it’s all about the peaceful atmosphere. The restaurant has stunning views of the surrounding nature, and it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends, have a laugh, and enjoy a break from the usual hustle and bustle—all without having to drive all the way to the middle of nowhere.

So, next time your honey jar is looking a little empty, why not make an adventure of it? Pabala’s not just a place to stock up on honey—it’s a chance to get out, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Cape. Trust me, your French toast will thank you.
