On this day 11th June 1900 The Battle of Donkerhoek /Diamond Hill is in its first full day of action.The Earl of Airlie of the 12th The Royal Lancers falls leading his men in a gallant charge to successfully save 2 guns of Q battery . He is shot by a Burgher of the Boksburg Commando. Major Fortescue also falls leading the 17th The Royal Lancers from a Ma**er of the Heidelberg Commando.
Observing as a journalist is Winston Churchill at his last action before returning home. Yet even as a journalist Winston cannot sit idle as he witnesses the struggle and is eventually recommended for the VC by Lt General Sir Ian Hamilton . De la Rey, Botha and Viljoen use the natural cliff like defences meticulously with well prepared sangers almost shell proof. 20,000 Brit and Boer fire over 6000 shells over 2 days in one of the last major actions of the entire war. Yet Packenham graces this battle with 3 paltry sentences in " The Boer War" . Next year is the 125th anniversary and Kleinfontein is planning something special but you dont have to wait until then. Come and see one of the best preserved battlefields in South Africa.

What makes a great tour? When you have great participants! Saving our heritage is only possible if the youth of today are involved. As parents, uncles, or elders, it is up to us to tell them of Reitz and Schikkerling, of Botha and Viljoen. Better still join me to see where our forefathers ate, slept and fought.
