Fun facts with Travel Lekker – Rhinos
1. The name rhinoceros means ‘nose horn’ and its often shortened to rhino.
2. These brilliant beasts are known for their awesome giant horns.
3. Javan and greater one horned rhino has one horn, whereas the white, black, and Sumatran rhinos have two.
4. There are less than 30,000 rhinos left in the wild due to poaching and habitat loss.
5. Three of the five rhino species are listed as being critically endangered (black rhino, Sumatran rhino and Javan rhino)
6. Rhino is an umbrella species – protect the rhino and you protect all the other species that share their habitat.
7. Both the white and black rhino are grey in colour – White rhino came from the Afrikaans word for “wide” and describes its mouth!
8. These incredible creatures are some of the biggest animals in the world! The largest of the five species is the white rhino, which can grow to 1.8m tall and can weigh a massive 2,500kg – the same weight of 30 men!
9. Despite their size, rhinos are herbivores (plant eaters) and love to munch on grass, plants, and bushes!
10. In Africa, white rhino is known as ‘grazers’ as they prefer the lush savannah grasses, while black rhino is known as ‘browsers’ as they prefer the bushes and trees of the dense thickets.
11. You can tell the difference between a white and black rhino by the shape of their mouths – the white rhino has a wide fat lip, and the black rhino has a more pointed lip.
12. A group of rhinos is called a ‘crash’.
13. A rhino horn is made from a protein called keratin, the same substance that fingernails and hair are made up of
14. They poo about 23kg of dung in a day! However, the dung enriches the soil and helps feed a huge array of creepy crawlies, such as dung beetles!
15. They often use stinky piles of poo to communicate with each other! These are known as 'middens’.
16. Rhino are great diggers and excavate minerals from the ground using their horns and feet.
17. Their best friends are often ‘feathered’ such as the Oxpecker (or tick bird) who live off the pesky insects on the rhino’s thick skin!
18. Whilst rhino have no natural predator, they can get frightened easily and their instinct is to charge at whatever has spooked them!
19. Tapirs, horses, and zebra are the closest relatives to the rhino. These animals are the odd-toed ungulates, and their footprints resemble the Ace of Clubs!
20. Females will reproduce every two and a half years and a calf will remain with their amazing mum for about three years.

Fun facts with Travel Lekker - Leopards
1. Because of its adapted retinas, leopards can see seven times better in the dark than humans.
2. Black leopards are seen infrequently in parts of Africa. The difference in color is not indicative of a separate sub-species, but rather dominance of the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin and is the opposite of albinism. Talking about the leopard’s physical appearance, there is a considerable variation in the coat color and rosette patterns depending on the location of the animal. In East Africa, the leopard’s rosettes are more circular but tend to be more square-shaped in southern Africa. The yellow coat is paler in the desert regions.
3. Portrayed as the most seldom seen, leopards are the most widely distributed African big cat. They can be found in a variety of habitats ranging from desert country to equatorial forests, high mountains to coasts. Few can also be spotted on the outskirts of large cities like Pretoria, Harare, and Nairobi.
4. Leopards are spectacular hunters! Not only are they quite fast and can run up to 58km/h but are also famous for their incredible agility and strength to climb trees while dragging a kill that is sometimes heavier than their body weight.
5. Leopards survive on a variety of prey. For example, in some regions of southern Africa, 80% of their diet comprises of rock hyrax. In the Kalahari Desert, they are known to Favour bat-eared fox. Leopards also eat fish, insects, reptiles, birds, rodents, porcupines, mongoose, baboons, genets, and monkeys.
6. How do you tell the difference between a leopard, cheetah, and jaguar? Look at the spots! Leopards have rosette spots on the body and solid black spots on the legs, head, and sides. There are also no black facial stripes, unlike cheetahs. Compared to jaguars, leopards do not have smaller spots inside the polygonal rosettes.
7. To recognize a male from a female look at the difference in size. Males are usually much larger and stockier and have a significantly bigger head and paws compared to females. Male bushveld leopards can weigh up to 90kgs, with female’s around 60kgs. The Cape leopard (not a separate species or sub-species) is much smaller with males around 35kg and females around 20kg.
Leopards can leap over six meters. This is where its curled tail comes in handy as it helps the leopard maintain balance and aids in steering the jump
8. African leopards’ mate throughout the year, but a higher sexual activity is recorded during the wet season.
9. Female leopards protect their young cubs by hiding them in lairs. Lairs can be found in a variety of places, including outcrops of granite boulders, old aardvark holes made in the side of termite mounds, or dense thickets at the bottom of deep galleys. These hiding places serve as a refuge for when the mother is away, as lions and hyenas pose a significant threat to the cubs. The mother changes the lair every few days to eliminate the chances of discovery by other predators.
10. Leopards make a variety of sounds, including a territorial hoarse, raspy cough, a contented purr, and a threatening hiss.
11. Even though most photographs show leopards in trees, research reveals that they spend most of their time on the ground. Leopards use trees as the perfect escape point from predators; to keep their kills out of the reach of scavengers, and to get the best vantage point.

Fun facts with Travel Lekker - Elephants
1. There are three different species of elephant – the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Elephants are known for their large ears, tusks made of ivory and their trunks – which are actually a fusion of their nose and upper lip.
2. Elephants are the world’s largest land animal! Male African elephants can reach 3m tall and weigh between 4,000 -7,500kg. Asian elephants are slightly smaller, reaching 2.7m tall and weighing 3,000– 6,000kg.
3. There’s an easy way to tell the African elephants apart from their Asian cousins – their ears! African elephants have large ears shaped like the continent of Africa! Asian elephants’ ears are smaller and shaped like India. Cool, huh?
4. You can tell a lot about an elephant by looking at their tusks! Elephant tusks never stop growing, so enormous tusks can be a sign of an old elephant. Both male and female African elephants grow tusks, but only male Asian elephants grow them. A tusk-less adult elephant is likely to be a female Asian elephant.
5. Until recently, African Forest elephants were thought to be a subspecies of the African elephant, but new research discovered that they are actually a separate species entirely. These elephants live in the tropical forests of Africa’s Congo Basin. They have straighter tusks and more rounded ears than Savannah elephants.
6. These magnificent mammals spend between 12 to 18 hours eating grass, plants and fruit every single day! They use their long trunks to smell their food and lift it up into their mouth – yum!
7. All that eating means one thing, gang, an awful lot of poo! Each elephant creates about one tonne of poo per week, which keeps the soil fertile and disperses tree seeds. Elephants also dig waterholes and create footpaths, literally changing the landscape around them!
8. In Mount Elgon National Park in Kenya, a group of elephants use their tusks to mine for salt in underground caves! They feel their way around with their trunks and eat the salts by breaking them off with their tusks.
9. Elephants have created their very own sunscreen! After a river or swamp bath, they’ll throw mud and sand up and over themselves to protect their skin from the hot, burning sun. Clever!
10. Sadly, elephants are in trouble. Many are killed by humans for their ivory tusks, because they’ve come into conflict with communities or simply for sport. There are far fewer Asian elephants (which are categorized as Endangered) than there are African elephants (listed as Vulnerable – at risk of becoming Endangered). Asian elephants also face threats from tourist attractions where people pay to ride on their backs or watch them paint pictures using their trunks.

Fun facts with Travel Lekker - Giraffes

1. Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth. Their legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet.
2. They can run as fast as 35 miles an hour over short distances, or cruise at 10 mph over longer distances.
3. A giraffe's neck is too short to reach the ground. As a result, it has to awkwardly spread its front legs or kneel to reach the ground for a drink of water.
4. Giraffes only need to drink once every few days. Most of their water comes from all the plants they eat.
5. Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up; they even sleep and give birth standing up.[5]
6. The giraffe calf can stand up and walk after about an hour and within a week, it starts to sample vegetation.
7. Despite the females’ attempts to stand over their calves during attacks by lions, spotted hyenas, leopards and African wild dogs (4), many calves are killed in their first few months.
8. A giraffe’s spots are much like human fingerprints. No two individual giraffes have exactly the same pattern.
9. Both male and female giraffes have two distinct, hair-covered horns called ossicones. Male giraffes use their horns to sometimes fight with other males.
10. Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period! They often achieve that in quick naps that may last only a minute or two at a time.
11. Whilst it was thought that giraffes did not make any sounds, this is now known to be untrue, as giraffes bellow, snort, hiss and make flute-like sounds, as well as low pitch noises beyond the range of human hearing.
