Did you know?
Kruger National Park (part 1)

The surface area of Kruger National Park is 7,580 miles² (19,633 km²) or roughly the size of the country of Israel. It is 360 kilometres (220 mi) from north to south and 65 kilometres (40 mi) from east to west.

The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere").

The park was first proclaimed in 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve by the then president of the Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger. He first proposed the need to protect the animals of the Lowveld in 1884, but his revolutionary vision took another 12 years to be realised when the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was set aside for restricted hunting.

James Stevenson-Hamilton (born in 1867) was appointed the park’s first warden on 1 July 1902.

On 31 May 1926 the National Parks Act was proclaimed and with it the merging of the Sabie and Shingwedzi Game Reserves into the Kruger National Park.

The first motorists entered the park in 1927 for a fee of one pound.

Out of the 517 species of birds found at Kruger, 253 are residents, 117 non-breeding migrants, and 147 nomads.

All the Big Five game animals are found at Kruger National Park, which has more species of large mammals than any other African game reserve at 147 species.

Don't miss part 2 on the Kruger National Park next week!

South Africa is a bird-watcher's paradise, with well over 900 species recorded in the sub-region. Our 14-day North-Eastern South Africa Birding Tour will introduce you to some of the top birding spots in South Africa, most of which are classified as “Important Bird Areas” as defined by Birdlife International. While the emphasis is certainly on birding, there will also be ample opportunity for game-viewing in some of South Africa’s iconic wildlife reserves.

Stephan and Kara relaxing on the sunset Hippo and Croc cruise on the estuary at St. Lucia on the KwaZulu Natal north coast.
St Lucia has one of the largest Estuary’s in Africa, its total length is approximately 85km South to North and 22km wide at its widest point.
The St Lucia estuary is an incredible place of wonder home to more than 800 Hippo’s that lounge about on the banks of the estuary and the estimated 1200 Nile crocodiles not to mention the abundance of birdlife. It is no wonder that the area was proclaimed as a world heritage in 1999 by UNESCO and is the first world heritage site in South Africa.

Rain has always been the lifeblood of South Africa's National Parks and Game Reserves. Without rain, the dams remain empty, the grazing shrivels up, become stunted and dies. If the grass, being the staple diet of all the many wild animals which roam this beautiful country of ours grows badly and dries out far too quickly, then we are in trouble. Everything depends on the amount of rain we receive. Water is essential for the survival of mankind and the fauna & flora.

The spectacular Three Rondawels and Blyde Dam as seen from the lookout point at the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga on our tour of The Panorama Route.
The Blyde River Canyon on the The Panorama Route is the third largest canyon in the world and one of South Africa's scenic wonders. It is also the greenest canyon in the world.
The Canyon starts at Bourke's Luck Potholes and ends at the Three Rondavels. From many well-positioned vantage points one has a view of the 33 km long canyon.
