It entails upgrading the existing single carriageway to new geometric standards at the various intersections, constructing and extending underpass to accommodate the new alignment on the road.

The Huguenot Tunnel in the Western Cape is set for a major upgrade. The tunnel’s North Bore is due for an upgrade that, once complete, will be operational alongside the South Bore, and cater to two lanes of traffic in each direction.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the construction stoppage on the R510 (sections 1 and 2) through Northam. Our teams are resolving the issues, and construction will resume soon. Two-way traffic is in place, and the road is safe to use.

During this project, we removed approximately seven camel thorn trees that were growing in the road reserve. As these are protected trees, we needed a permit to do so.

An average of 13 000 vehicles pass through the Huguenot Tunnel each day. And during peak holiday seasons, this number increases to around 25 000 vehicles.

This is one of the reasons why the upgrade of the Huguenot Tunnel’s North Bore is so important. The upgrades will be inline with international safety standards, and meet mobility demands of increasing traffic volumes.
