The World’s Oldest Human Footprints

On a day further back in time than our minds can comprehend, three early humans inadvertently left a mark that spawned throughout most of human history. Walking along a savanna which had cooled from a recent volcanic eruption, the trio left their footprints in ash made soggy by rain. When a subsequent eruption spewed a giant cloud of blanketing ash over the same area, the voids they created in the paleosurface became perfectly preserved - for almost 4 million years.

Located in Laetoli, Tanzania, the Laetoli Footprints are the oldest human footprints (or hominin footprints) ever discovered. Found purely by chance due to erosion, by a team spearheaded by famous paleontologist Mary Leakey in 1978, the find was scientifically lauded as empirical evidence which finally proved the theory that humans of the Pliocene epoch were bipedal – they walked on two feet. The difference between the Laetoli prints and a human print is virtually indistinguishable.

The trail stretches for 88 feet and all in all comprises 70 distinct individual trackways - various birds and possibly an African hare among those who also left their enduring mark. The only human species known to have existed in the area is Australopithecus afarensis, the same species as the famous ‘Lucy’ fossil, discovered in Ethiopia in 1974. Australopithecus afarensis fossils have been located in the nearby Olduvai Gorge region and since these fossils were also found in the same layer of sediment as the footprints, this particular early ancestor of ours is credited with making them - 3.7 million years ago.

Taking a closer look we can see the footprints on the left - which are believed to be that of a female - show her left foot going considerably deeper into the ash than her right foot. Scholars have suggested that she may have been carrying a baby on her right hip, causing her to lean on her left side to set her balance. To her right are thought to be the footprints of a male who possessed larger feet. Over to the far right of the image an accompanying child - who at first walked inside the bigger male footprints – then wandered off track, making their own small prints.

Evidence that the Laetoli footprints were made by bipedal humans is shown in the fact that the big toe is in line with the other toes, in the same way ours are today. These people had long evolved from having stereotypical ape-like feet whose toe is positioned away from the others, similar to how a thumb is separated from the four fingers. These footprints show that the gait of these early humans was heel-strike followed by toe-off - the way modern humans walk. The shape of the feet, along with the length and configuration of the toes, show that the Laetoli Footprints were made by an early human.
