Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve

The most colourful of butterflies, natural beauty, lush kloofs, indigenous forests and the plentiful birdlife make it a much loved spot for both hiking and bird-watching. During late summers and early Autumn visitors to Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve are often enthralled by the variety and number of butterflies that they encounter here, and if you are particularly lucky you might get to see a Narina Trogon. Samango monkeys can be seen jumping from branch to branch in the and sightings of other birds such as Cape Parrots, Robin-Chat, Green Twinspot, Orange Ground-Thrush, Black-fronted Bush-Shrike and Barratt's Warbler will delight. What's more, the hills are alive with the spectacular colours of acacias, blossoms of white and purple, through to flaming oranges and reds. The reserve is situated between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit. Follow the R 36 from Tzaneen to Hoedspruit for approx 40 kilometres and then turn right, following the signboards to The Downs.
