KwaZulu-Natal’s Ramsgate South Beach has been awarded the excellent Blue Flag award. This means that it is outstanding for its environmental initiatives and standards, amenities, hygiene, safety, and educational value. But, more than these criteria, it is a scenic and fun place to spend a summery day. In fact, thanks to this area’s almost year-round sunshine, you won’t even need to wait for summer - this beach is a January-to-December hit.

Ramsgate South Beach has beautifully warm water, which is fantastic for swimming, surfing and stand-up paddling. As the beach curls around, there are rocky areas that are not only irresistible for little ones to climb, but also create little rock pools for them to explore for hours.

This part of the coast gets visited by whales during the second half of the year. Standing on the shores or sitting on a quiet bench and getting to see these mammoth mammals swim by is humbling and thrilling all at once. There are special whale-watching areas at Ramsgate South Beach so that spectators can get the best view.

Durban and its international airport are about an hour from the beach.

NATURE & THE ENVIRONMENT
This is an area blessed with beautiful scenery – from indigenous coastal & riverine forest, golden beaches & the blue Indian Ocean. The many gorges, lagoons & rivers add to the scenery. Bird life is abundant & larger game can be seen in the surrounding nature reserves. Then there’s the rich marine life found off the coast – including plenty of shark species, whales & dolphins. The Community of Ramsgate is very proud of the natural beauty of Ramsgate & works hard to conserve and promote it as much as possible.

THE HISTORY OF RAMSGATE
The original inhabitants of the area were the hunter-gatherer San people; they were later pushed out of the area with the arrival of the Zulu and then European and Indian peoples. While Zulu clans established themselves, European settlement was slow – the many rolling hills, rivers, gorges and ravines made the going difficult for the traditional pioneer ox wagons. 1895 marked a significant year in the town’s development – a ship carrying sugar, the Fascadale, was wrecked off the shore of the current town’s location. This same year, the railway from Durban to Ramsgate was completed, opening up the way for a stream of new migrants to the town, including Captain Crompton, who started up a trading store on the newly named Fascadale Road. The Fascadale also lent her name to the local post office, and to the now burgeoning small community on the north bank of the lagoon which was soon to grow into a true town – Ramsgate.

The area boasts a rich blend of cultural heritages, including English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Indian. With just 1500 permanent residents, Ramsgate is the quintessential small seaside village! English, Afrikaans and Zulu are all commonly spoken here, as well as some Xhosa (given the town’s proximity to the Eastern Cape).

Ramsgate - The Whale Deck

In The Ramsgate area The Whale Deck & Conservancy is an icon for eco tourism and environmental education. The deck has the best view for whale & dolphin watching and moon watching! The beautiful deck has been revamped in the past year and is now wheelchair accessible too.

The most ocean activity is seen from May to November where you can see Humpback, Southern right and Brydes whales, along with a range of dolphins. Our most eventful time of year along the coastline is the Sardine Run between June & August, when the greatest shoal on earth passes our little town, bringing with it a tremendous amount of bird, sea life and excitement!

A “Mooddeckers” event is held every full moon at the deck, where you can enjoy the beautiful moon rise and bring a picnic along, a small fee of R20 is charged which goes towards the conservancy. More information available around full moons on the https://www.facebook.com/southernexplorerkzn or https://www.facebook.com/Ramsgateconcervany pages.
