Using a travel agent / DMC / tour operator vs doing it yourself is often a question I have seen on facebook followed by big discussions as to how the agency always comes out to be more expensive than doing it yourself.

Is it really that more expensive to use an agency as opposed to doing everything yourself.

No one likes to work for free, so yes there will be costs involved as it is our job. We offer a service to the public to ease the hassle out of planning a holiday. By you booking through agencies, we are able to pay our bills and put food on the table.

I can think of a few examples where you can do things yourself but having to pay someone else to do it takes the hassle out of it:

>Wash your dogs yourself or take them to a dog parlour

Lets break this down further into costs:

>Doing the chores yourself is priceless! Who wants to spend their off days cleaning their house? To get someone to do it for you costs R350 per day!
>Cooking your own meals is so much cheaper, lovely roast chicken, roast potato and vegetables, but what if you just need that break, go out to eat and spend R250 per person! If you are a family of 4 this can cost you close to R800 just for one meal!

So as you can see, humans are designed to delegate jobs, why do it myself when there is someone else that is happy to take on the job. This is exactly why you need to make use of an agency that deals with the destination you are wanting to visit. 95% chance that person you are dealing with has actually been to that destination. They can give you tips and ideas.
