Friends of Rayton - Donkerhoek Country Living - an Eco-friendly Bushveld Getaway

Donkerhoek Country Living offers a 12-sleeper, self catering home in a beautiful bushveld area only 20 minutes from Pretoria. The house has two double bedrooms, one room with 2 bunk beds (i.e. four beds), a sleeper couch and two child beds. A big barbeque on an outdoor deck area and a small splash pool for summer; a cozy fireplace in winter.
Our house is fully solar powered and features a rain water harvesting system for water supply that can be supplemented with borehole water. We also sport a fancy composting toilet and make use of grey water for the other toilets. The kitchen has a gas stove/gas oven combination and we do not make use of microwaves due to their high power consumption. Trash is responsibly recycled and our chickens love all scrap food!
Come and experience how easy and practical it is to live sustainably. We are happy to answer any questions and give advice on our green systems if you are interested in installing it yourselves. Guests are advised that the dishwasher, can only be used during 9am - 4pm and the water pressure pump to the house will switch off at 10pm and on at 7am to conserve battery power through the night.
We are pet friendly! Your dogs will love all the space to run around and walks in the veld.

Lefokeng Bush Camp offers a tranquil Bushveld experience.
Our Camp Site is fenced in and our family ablutions are equipped with hot water showers, toilets & basins as well as a wash-up area for your dishes. There are no electrical points at our camp sites.
Each camp site comes with a boma style braai & grid. There is a Pool to help cool you down on those hot days. Wood and ice are available on request.

Visitors come to Dinokeng Game Reserve (it’s barely 40 minutes drive from downtown Pretoria) for time out from the stresses of normal daily routine to relax and enjoy the adventure, the tourist facilities and great nature experiences that our beautiful Game Reserve has to offer.
What better way than to drive along more than 140kms of winding tracks (most of which is suitable to sedan vehicles) stopping from time to time to be in contact with an environment where wild animals, creatures plants and humans live side by side? Permits to use the route can be purchased at the gates of the Reserve or online. A new handy detailed map guide can be purchased with your permit. It has a very detailed map and places to stop for comfort breaks, meals or picnics. It is full of interesting animal, bird and plant information, and can keep the young ones interested. Various restaurants along the route are also a must to visit.
This is a truly different Game Reserve experience where visitors feel closer to the bush and enjoy greater freedom to explore whilst contributing financially to the future of conservation in Tshwane.

Friends of Rayton - Dikgomo Cottage offers self-catering accommodation in a refurbished dairy and is located on a small farm in the Leeuwkloof Valley. The farm is home to indigenous Nguni cattle and is a wonderful spot for a tranquil retreat from the city.

The cottage comprises 2 bedrooms and can sleep up to 4 guests. The main bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed, while the second bedroom contains a single bed. A single sleeper couch is provided in the lounge. Guests share the use of a bathroom that is fitted with a shower.

The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, gas stove, microwave, toaster, and kettle. Guests enjoy access to a braai area and a splash pool outside the cottage.

With its central location between Cullinan and Dinokeng Nature Reserve, the farm is an easy drive from various activities and attractions in the area.

Friends of Rayton Meander - Situated East of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, Tendeni Private Lodge offers guests glamping accommodation just 60 km from Pretoria.

The lodge offers guests a choice of booking a tent or chalet, all of which can accommodate 2 people each. On request and at an additional cost, children under the age of 18 can be accommodated on a stretcher, or for the more adventurous, a rooftop tent.

Each of the open-plan units is furnished with a king-size bed and a ceiling fan, and has an en-suite bathroom fitted with a shower, a bath, and a toilet. For convenience, linen and bath towels are provided, and guests please need to bring their own swimming towels.

The kitchenettes are equipped with fridge-freezers, microwaves, 2-plate gas stoves, cutlery and crockery, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and meals can be enjoyed at the dining table. Guests can relax and enjoy a drink on the stoep that overlooks the private braai facilities.

The lodge offers guests a communal lapa with a lounge, a kitchen, a dining area, a bar, as well as an outdoor braai area, or guests can cool down in the swimming pool.

Friends of Rayton Meander - Nestled peacefully in a valley surrounded by pristine bush, Somabula Nature Reserve offers the perfect environment in which to unwind. Ideally situated for weekend getaways, only one hour from Johannesburg and 40 minutes from Pretoria, the reserve boasts a wide variety of antelope as well as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest and an abundance of birdlife.
Somabula Nature Reserve Offers self-catering chalets, shaded camp sites and accommodation in beautifully restored ox wagons. Activities include game viewing, hiking and birdwatching.
Pioneer Cottage A quaint thatched 2 sleeper cottage built in the mid 1800s with manure floors and shutters. One bedroom with double bed, lounge/dining area, inside kitchen and bath /toilet. All linen and towels provided. Solar lighting, gas stove, water heater and small fridge, crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils provided. The cottage is equipped with a braai area overlooking the valley.
To date, fifty species of mammals have been recorded on the reserve ranging in size from Giraffe to the pygmy mouse weighing in at just six grams!
A number of antelope species can be seen during drives and walks on the reserve. Although many of the smaller nocturnal mammals are shy and difficult to observe, tracks and signs give away their presence and can be seen virtually anywhere if one looks closely. Somabula Nature Reserve is well known for its howling jackals which may be heard at just about any time of the day but most often in the early evening. Visitors are advised to pack away all food items before leaving your accommodation, as Vervet monkeys may become problematic.
Frogs are common at Somabula Nature Reserve. They are most easily seen after dark on warm summer nights when males gather at wetland areas to call. Choruses can be almost deafening at close range and may be heard from any part of the reserve during the summer breeding season. Listen out for frogs on summer nights. You will probably be able to hear sand frogs, kassinas, cacos and toads calling. Thirty-five reptile species can be seen.
