CITY NATURE CHALLENGE - The iNaturalist City Nature Challenge is an exciting annual initiative which invites and motivates people from around the world to document wildlife, using biodiversity apps like iNaturalist.

The Garden Route region will participate in the 2024 challenge, with the observation / documentation period from 26 April 2024 to 29 April 2024.

Hessequa Tourism invites all residents, holidaymakers and day visitors to participate in the challenge by photographing wildlife found within the Hessequa region and recording it on the iNaturalist App.

A few excellent locations includes, but is not limited too:
1. Garcia Mountain Pass (Riversdale)
2. Witsand Nature Reserve (Witsand)
3. Culla Uys Nature Garden (Heidelberg)
4. Pauline Bohnen Nature Reserve (Stilbaai)

TOURISM MONITORS PROGRAMME: The Tourism Monitors Programme, as implemented by the National Department of Tourism is inviting youth from the Stilbaai, Jongensfontein and Melkhoutfontein area to apply for the one (1) position as Tourism Monitor for a 12-month period, with the hosting venue located in Stilbaai.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM CRITERIA:
- Be a South African citizen;
- Be unemployed youth between the age of 18 to 35;
- Must have a grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification;
- Reside within a 28-km radius of the hosting town, within the Hessequa Municipal area;
- Be able to work flexible hours (e.g.) weekends, public holidays and as when required;
- Have a passion or interest in the tourism sector.

RIVERSDALE - The Sleeping Beauty Day Hiking Trail covers a scenic trail of 12-kilometers to the crest and 12-kilometers back. The trail ranges from medium to very difficult and technical at some sections and offers a diversity of flora and fauna – with the national flower, the Protea and the scarce Erica Blenna seen along the trail. The spotting of Cape Weavers, Protea Canary and Cape Sugarbirds makes for a exiting time along the trail.

The Sleeping Beauty Day Trail has beautiful views and you can refill on water at the ravines, which you’ll find between 1.5-kilometer and 2.5-kilometer on the trail. The ravines are ideal locations for a well-deserved break as the first 6-kilometers on the trail can be very challenging under humid conditions. The trail also has a lovely picnic area within a smaller forest section, found after about 5-kilometers along the trail.

The last 1.5-kilometer is another very steep incline to the crest from where you have the most magnificent views of the Langeberg Mountain and the Korentepoort Dam.

It is highly recommended that social hikers only hike until the picnic area (about 5-kilometers from the starting point). Intermediate and seasoned hikers can challenge the full trail, as it is very technical and difficult to the mountain peak and back.

The Sleeping Beauty Day Trail is managed by CapeNature (permit required) and is the ideal trail to experience for nature enthusiasts.

Please make sure you follow the golden hiking rules:
1. Walk on the marked trail only;
2. Always hike in a group;
3. Book your permit in advance;
4. Do not harm the plant and birdlife;
5. Do not litter;
6. Bring along sufficient drinking water and energy snacks;
7. Wear protective clothing and hiking shoes;
8. Ensure that you study the route in advance;
9. Start hiking early morning and
10. Always inform family and friends that you will be hiking and provide estimate times of completion.

HESSEQUA ADVENTURE RACE - The secret is out! The third Hessequa Adventure Race is set to take place 25-27 October 2024, with the stunning Heidelberg (Western Cape), known for its active farm life experiences, marvellous indigenous forest, mountain bike trails and awe-inspiring views within a beautiful nature setting, being the hosting town.

The Hessequa Adventure Race shall makes provision for a 12-hour and 30-hour challenge, which will push participants beyond their limits and enable them to live their passions and getting into a healthy space.

Adventure racing enthusiasts can expect to experience kayaking, cycling and running within the diverse Heidelberg area and discover why the Hessequa region has a slogan as The Explorer's Garden Route.

ALBERTINIA - Jakkalsvlei, directly translated as Jackal’s Marsh, is a family owned winery nestled along the beautiful and world famous Garden Route. The Jonker family has been proud owners of Jakkalsvlei since 1972, and today it is farmed by the 3rd generation Jonkers on the farm.

The farmland was called Jakkalsvlei because of all the foxes, jackal’s and wild cats seen in the mountains surrounding the farmland. While hunting in the Southern Cape during this time, Nelis Jonker (senior) was inspired to buy this beautiful piece of land. Jantjie Jonker, Nelis’s grandson settled on the farm in 2006. In 2008 he bottled the first wine under the Jakkalsvlei label.

Today Jakkalsvlei Wines are enjoyed by people all over South Africa, including some fine restaurants. You can’t help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the marvellous Langeberg Mountain range, which surrounds the farm.

Come and explore this authentic, off-the-beaten-track wine farm, which is only half an hour away from Albertinia and get a taste of the Garden Route.

WITSAND - The Witsand Nature Reserve offers nature lovers five short route ranging between 0.3-kilometer and 1.1-kilometer.

The route allows visitors to relax in nature and soak up the goodness mother nature has to offer. With names like Nick’s Trail, Jetty Route and See-uitsig Route, visitors are assured of a pet-friendly nature reserve which also serves as Whale Watching point.

This nature reserve is also ideal for a fitness run and has stunning views of the Bay. Walking or jogging in a nature reserve is a powerful way to improve your physical, emotional and mental health, allowing you to get into a good space.

This nature reserve is an open access facility and visitors are reminded to stay on the marked trails.

DIBIKI MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE & TRAIL RUN - The Dibiki Mountain Bike Challenge and Trail Run is set to take place on Saturday, 22 June 2024 in the picturesque town of Riversdale, which is the home of the marvellous Sleeping Beauty Mountain Peak.

The Mountain Bike Challenge makes provision for a challenging 53-kilometer route, a moderate yet scenic 44-kilometer route and an all-rounder 17-kilometer route. All MTB riders will have scenic views of the beloved Sleeping Beauty, farmlands and can look forward to some cooler winter weather, which makes for the ideal MTB conditions.

E-Bikers will be entertained by a challenging 53-kilometer route along some farmlands with agricultural and Fynbos scenery.

All Trail Runners can look forward to a 17-kilometer route, which consists of a short section of tarred road. In addition, the 5-kilometer Fun Run is the ideal family route, which one can run and walk.

The event starting-line and finishing-line is at the Dibiki Riversdal Holiday Resort, where runners and bikers will be able to stay in a self-catering units or camp at one of the camping and caravan plots.

HEIDELBERG - Active farm life experiences, a marvellous indigenous forest, mountain bike trails and awe-inspiring views within a beautiful nature setting are synonymous with this town, which guards the entrance to the Garden Route.

The community loves a good story and are known to indulge in some colorful descriptions of the characters and happenings of the area. Experience ‘platteland’ lifestyle at its best, with meaningful conversations, interesting art, quirky farm stalls, well-preserved historical buildings and leisurely exploration.

This quiet towns soul-soothing camping and glamping experiences, located along the farm-lands of town offers the ideal setting to reflect, relax and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul. The town shares strong resemblance to its counterpart in Germany, with the likes of the Heidelberg Post Office a regular feature on international visitors photography-list.

The marvellous Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the reserve’s 250-ha of Southern Afrotemperate forest, the largest remaining example in the Langeberg. Visitors to this beautiful reserve will relish the opportunity to get out into the forest on day walks and mountain biking trails. This is an excellent birding destination with more than 196 bird species regularly spotted. Hikers are likely to bump into bushbuck and spot baboons and smaller mammals when out on the trails. Sighting the Forest emperor butterfly and a subspecies of the rare Ghost frog would be the highlight of a visit here, as they can only be found in this particular forest. In addition to the indigenous forest experiences, this nature reserve also offers self-catering cabins, well-equipped glamping tents and camping plots. This is tranquil living at its best, a feature that is passionately preserved by the locals.

The Hessequa Art Route is well-represented and hosts monthly open days, where art lovers and globetrotters can make meaningful connections by meeting the artist at their studio's. The next open studio day is scheduled for Saturday, 27 April 2024. In addition to the monthly open studio day, various artists and facilities offers courses and special days like the Pen and Ink Workshop (Saturday, 06 April 2024) at Star Nation Art Studio, Bread Course (Thursday, 18 April 2024) and Pasta Course (Saturday 27 April 2024) at Delish Restaurant.

Heidelberg is home to many excellent restaurants, coffee shops and farm stalls which all offer a unique visitor experience.

The hamlet of Slangrivier is located a mere 15-minute drive from Heidelberg and compliments the diversity of this town. Slangrivier offers excellent gravel roads which connects to all the surrounding towns like Witsand, Vermaaklikheid and ultimately the coastal towns of Jongensfontein and Stilbaai. These gravel roads are ideal for endurance mountain bikers.

STILBAAI KELDERS WINE EXPO - The 8th annual Stilbaai Kelders Wine Expo will start today from 16h00 until 20h00 at the Stilbaai Community Hall. You will also have the opportunity to attend tomorrow (28 March 2024) from 16h00 until 20h00.

This event is the biggest event of its nature within Hessequa and is highly recommended for lovers of fine wine, families and friends.

The wines at this expo is presented by a variety of wine farms and you as attendee will be able to buy wines at the best prices! 130 wines will be available to taste.

The entry fee to the expo is a mere R100 per person, which includes a wine tasting glass. All tickets are available at the Stilbaai Community Hall doors or at Stilbaai Kelders.

ENDURO RACING - The Riversdale leg of the CSMX Enduro Racing was hosted on Saturday, 23 March 2024 in Riversdale.

Hessequa Tourism would like to thank CSMX Enduro Racing for hosting this event within the Hessequa region and look forward to the next event.

This event is yet another testament of the diversity of this town, which is branded as The Sleeping Beauty Breakaway Route, with a focus on the available nature-based activities like endurance adventure racing, mountain hiking and horse riding.

WITSAND - The Witsand Putt-Putt & Pret Park will be hosting an exciting Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, 30 March 2024.

The Easter Egg Hunt will consist of 10 giant eggs, hidden around the Witsand Putt-Putt & Fun Park - each egg will contain a riddle. You will then have to make your way around the Witsand Putt-Putt and Fun Park and return a completed question / answer sheet at the Putt-Putt Kiosk to receive a prize.

The hunt starts at 13h00 with the entry fee being R60 per child. It is important to book before 29 March 2024.
