This year’s Pon Van Zyl Award celebrates a true legend of the Wine of Origin Robertson, Stephen de Wet. With a career spanning 55 vintages, Stephen has been instrumental in establishing Robertson as a premier wine-growing region and has left an enduring mark on South Africa’s wine industry.

A visionary, Stephen founded two renowned wine brands, established three wineries and pioneered innovations like one of the first bottling lines in Robertson and early drip irrigation in South Africa. These advancements helped elevate his wines to global acclaim and secured Robertson’s place on the world wine map.

Beyond the cellar, Stephen served on the Wine & Spirit Board for 21 years, mentoring young winemakers and inspiring a new generation of talent to continue Robertson’s legacy of excellence.

Stephen’s passions extend to horse breeding, where he has produced champions and won prestigious races like the Durban July. Remarkably, his racing successes helped fund a new winery and repair flood-damaged facilities, showcasing his resilience and innovation.

From riding a horse to school as a boy to winning South Africa’s toughest endurance race, the Faure-Smith, Stephen embodies perseverance and excellence in all he does.

It is with immense pride that we honour Stephen de Wet, fondly known as “Master,” as this year’s Pon Van Zyl Award recipient for his extraordinary contributions to the wines and people of Robertson.
