NAMIBIAN TOUR 17 – 28 September 202
Lone Men of Kaokoland
There are said to be 37 outdoor sculptures, each one unique. They provoke intriguing questions: Who created them? Why? The stones remain silent, guarding their secrets and deepening the allure of Kaokoland’s raw and untouched beauty. How many will we discover on our journey?
In the forgotten landscapes of Namibia’s Kaokoland—places like Purros, Van Zyl’s Pass, and the haunting Skeleton Coast—stand the mysterious stone men. These enigmatic sculptures, scattered across the stark, rugged terrain, stir the imagination and have become symbolic of the region’s compelling and enigmatic history.
Each figure is meticulously crafted from stone, silently narrating a story for those curious enough to stop and wonder. Sitting, standing, kneeling, crawling, hands raised or clinging to rock—each pose feels deliberate and intimate, like frozen whispers in time.

Kaokoland: Namibia’s Wild Heart
Though now officially part of the Kunene Region, “Kaokoland” remains the evocative, informal name for this vast and remote wilderness. It stretches from the Hoanib River in the south to the Kunene River in the north, which forms the border with Angola. This is one of Namibia’s most sparsely populated and wildest areas—where dramatic landscapes, cultural heritage, and timeless solitude converge.

The Story of Fort Sesfontein
Journey through time in the remote reaches between Damaraland and Kaokoveld and uncover the layered history of Fort Sesfontein. Originally established as a German military outpost in 1896, the fort was built at a site known for its six perennial springs, which offered water for people, wildlife, and agriculture.
Long before the fort was built, however, the area saw the migration of the Himba people, around 500 years ago, from drought-stricken northeastern Africa. They brought with them their resilient way of life, herding livestock and thriving in this challenging environment.
Today, Fort Sesfontein lives on as a gateway to adventure and cultural discovery. The Fort Sesfontein Lodge & Safaris, along with the Sesfontein Conservancy, continues the legacy of conservation, offering experiences that celebrate the region’s wildlife, history, and unique heritage.
