The northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal province is a paradise for the nature and culture loving traveller. It is here that one finds not only savanna with the famous Big-5 and other animals, but also forests, beaches, lakes, estuaries, wetlands and of course the sub-tropical Indian Ocean. Where else can one kayak amongst hippos and crocodiles, watch turtles lay eggs, see whales breach, swim with d

olphins and whale sharks, scuba dive amazing coral reefs, embark on a walking safari with an armed ranger, take photos on game drives, enjoy the beach, or get eye to eye with cheetahs and elephants at an animal rehabilitation centre? And all of that less than two hours drive from each other. Moreover, the climate here is lovely and the region practically malaria free! We regard ourselves as experts when it comes to create tours to northern KwaZulu-Natal. Contrary to other travel agents, we actually do really live here ourselves and can genuinely call ourselves specialists of the region. In addition, all our tours are created in such a way that one will really 'experience' South Africa rather than just cruise through South Africa 'sight seeing'. To achieve this, we give our guests/clients extensive information packs about the destinations, limit travel times between destinations to about 2 hours max, and have them stay for more than one day at destinations, in order to get a genuine experience. Lastly, all our guided tours are not led by a generic tour guide, but by a professional and highly qualified safari guide or biologist. Our travel products include self drive safaris, guided safaris or a combination thereof. In addition we focus on photographic safaris, where we can include gear rental and photographic workshops/lessons if so desired. Visit our website www.tailormadesafaris.co.za or drop us an email at [email protected]. We would love to help you create the safari of a lifetime!

Vredefort Dome Crater, located in the Free State province of South Africa is the largest crater in the world and the oldest known impact structure in the world, with an originally diameter 300km, now 160km visible. Dated to be over 2 billion years.

The crater was formed when an asteroid , roughly the size of Table mountain (10-15 km wide) struck earth at around 20km/s (72,000 km/h). The explosion is believed to have been thousands time stronger than that of a nuclear bomb, creating a melted rock layer and causing shockwaves across the planet.

The area around Vredefort contains high quality minerals like red ochre, gold, copper, other metals, quartzite and chert which the indigenous people of South Africa used for making tools, these materials were shaped into arrowheads, scrapers and spear points for hunting and daily use. Red ochre was used for painting, decorating and rituals. Locals indigenous communities in the region were known for their trade in gold, possibly from the crater and other nearby sources.

Although Vredefort Dome was not a major mining site, indigenous people used it's minerals for tools, paint and trade thousands of years before European contact. The impact structure exposed valuable rocks and minerals, making it a useful resource for indigenous African people
