The beaches surrounding the Lake St Lucia estuary mouth are littered with decaying barbel (washed into the ocean after the breach of the mouth and strong outgoing current). Way too many for the beach scavenging gulls, Wooly-necked storks, Yellow-billed kites, Grey heron, Yellow-billed storks and Palm-nut vultures to dispose of. The estuary mouth is deep and wide with a strong outflow of water into the ocean. Good number of terns again with Lesser crested, Greater crested, Common, Little, Sandwich and Caspian all present this morning.

24hrs after the breach of the Lake St Lucia estuary and the mouth is approximately 100m wide. Lots of bird activity with Yellow-billed stork, herons and Egrets gathering to take advantage of the fish feast. Thousands of barbel and the odd Tilapia washing up on the beaches after being swept out of the Lake and river with the strong current and being exposed to the ocean water. Many people gathering to take advantage of the easy catch too. Nice tern roost consisting of Lesser crested, Greater crested, Common, Sandwich and Caspian tern. Waders included Grey plover, Curlew, Marsh & Common sandpiper, White-fronted plover, Eurasian whimbrel, Common-ringed plover and Common greenshank.

The Rising water levels in the Lake St Lucia estuary have flooded a few areas in St Lucia and also quite sadly risen to drown many of the Southern brown-throated, Eastern golden and Thick-billed weaver nests- with Barbel coming to clean out the nests.

The Lake St Lucia estuary mouth re-opened to the ocean at 10am this morning due to high rainfall in catchment areas during the past week and rising water levels in the lake. Within 30 minutes of the breach already 3 Bull sharks hunting in the shallows! Tern roost at the mouth consisted of Greater crested, Sandwich, Common and Little terns.
