Right now, the participants are in full prep mode, making sure their 4x4s are ready to take on what promises to be an unforgettable adventure. With just 1 day to go, the excitement is building as we get ready to roll out on Wednesday for a five-day journey through some of the toughest terrain and most breathtaking landscapes.
This event is not for the faint-hearted. Mentally, it will push competitors to their limits, and physically, their vehicles will be put to the ultimate test. From rocky passes to technical climbs, every section of the route is designed to challenge skill, endurance, and teamwork.
It’s not just about the challenge. It’s about the experience, the camaraderie, the raw beauty of the landscapes, and the thrill of conquering obstacles that seem impossible. This is what Cape Route Rally is all about.

I have to return to drive-up Johnny se poort. We just need to bring enough young guys to move and pack rocks. There are a few large boulders in the way that need to be moved to drive it up.
I have a few plans to upgrade the Defender. I definitely need to add Patrol axles and gearbox. If I had to drive up Johnny se poort, I would have broken something, my CV’s are already making a noise…

What would you have to do to your car to come and join us?
Power. Every time somebody says can we come and do this I always say guys you need over 200 kilowatts. If you want to come to the dunes and play probably, you need over 200 kilowatts.
You definitely need a minimum of a 33 and preferably a 35. I don’t think beadlocks are a need, but obviously they do help when you in the dunes.
Mud tires for sure. If you want to really take advantage of all the terrains. If you drive an all-terrain really fast on a gravel road and then you put your muds on, it’s night and day difference. The muds are just so much stronger, the lateral loads that you can build into the side walls are much higher and the breaking is very much improvement on a mud.
Then obviously suspension, you need to go like three, four inches and then come with the right car… don’t come with a Discovery 2….

It was funny to see the peoples faces at Johnny se poort, it was awesome. I didn’t know what to expect, on the video’s it looks flat and easy to crawl, but it truly is something else in person. I would rate it the toughest climb I have ever seen in my life. It is very very steep, much steeper than a video can do this justice. The steepness and loose rocks make it impossible to crawl, you are going to need to drive it with momentum like a dune. The steepness with rock ledges is going to make that a very interesting climb!

It’s an amazing team and everyone has nice builds and drive a lekker pace. The routes were next level. The Lambert’s Bay dunes was my favourite, they were steep. The sand was wet, so it was easier than usual, but still very challenging dunes, nice and steep and the dune surfing with Louis and the team was epic!
