Mana Mornings

The moon’s
luminous shards splinter
through the treetops, and
I strain my eyes,
desperate to distinguish the animal
scuffing through the undergrowth
in the dead of night;

Heavy with sleep at first, but now
wakeful, watchful, filled
with wonder... what can it be?
My heart, my breath, too loud..
I must still my nerves
to hear, and see...
I even smell it, that earthy, wild aroma -
buffalo perhaps, so near and yet so far...

A cough... leopard? A bark of alarm...
this night so full of action
beneath the splintered moon.
The soft thud of paws through the campsite -
something looking for food
around the ashes of the long dead fire
harbouring the aroma
of last night’s braai...

I nod off and awaken to the squealing
of baboons descending from their roost,
squabbling and barking as they set off
to find breakfast..
A cold mist hangs over the river,
tinted gold by the rising sun;
Dust hangs
like suspended gold in the chilly winter air,
and I know, as I gaze upon this Mana morning -
there is no place like it...
this is heaven on earth.
