Today is International African Penguin Awareness Day!

African penguins mate for life ❤️❤️

The vast majority of all African penguin couples, between 80-90% , stay together for their entire lives.

Their nesting season is March to May and both parents share the responsibility of incubating the eggs, which take 40-day period.

Once a chick has hatched, it joins a creche with other chicks while the parents go out to hunt!

So much to see in the Museum and nearby Ann Bryant Art Gallery

The arresting coelacanth sculpture which enjoys pride of place outside the East London Museum is not only a tribute to Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer - it is also a work of environmental protest.

The interior cavity of the four-and-a-half ton fish is stuffed with a large wad of discarded fishing line which the artist collected during a beach cleanup - on World Environment Day.

Sculptor Graham Jones, who created the cast iron coelacanth in 2008, has said his work was inspired by the simple yet complex opposites of nature - life and death, beauty and ugliness, etc.

We turned Elliot, our most recent art resident, into an avid bird watcher as well as teaching him a thing or two about stone sculpting. This Spotted Eagle Owl currently comes regularly to forage in the garden. And with his zoom lens he got some great shots. His rapter list included the local Fish Eagles, Yellow-billed Kite, Osprey, Long Crested Eagle, Black Eagle and the Crowned Eagle.
