“The Garden of the Garden Route” welcomes you to the area the ancient San people called the “place of many waters.”

This land lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East. Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to centuries old trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi an

d many others. Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning "place of abundant or sparkling water". The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean. The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs. A mild all year round climate allows one to make the most of all the outdoor activities that are on offer, whilst a high rainfall ensures the lushness of vegetation that the area is renowned for. Storms River Village stemmed from a shooting box built by TH Duthie in 1841, then developed into a construction camp for the builders and was declared a crown village in 1885. It offers a couple of small shops; postal agency, liquor store, police station, curio shop, various restaurants and a choice of accommodation options. Tsitsikamma National Park, declared in 1964, encompasses a marine reserve made up of 80km of coastline and offers the visitor magnificent scenery, walks, a small beach, restaurant and shop. The famous Storms River suspension Bridge spans the river mouth. There is also the Natures Valley rest camp at natures Valley. www.sanparks.org | Tel: 042 2811 607

Eerste Rivier, a holiday village, lies on a rocky coastline. The Fynbos Golf & Country Estate offers a 18-hole golf course which is open to the public. Tel: 042 2850 321

The Hotel’s Hunters Pub was a hunting lodge that was built in 1841 to accommodate hunters who walked into the area to hunt game in the surrounding forests. In 1860, Thomas Bain constructed the road from Plettenberg Bay to Kareedouw through the Tsitsikamma. This 184 km road took 4 years to complete with the help of 200 convicts. Just past the Tsitsikamma Village Inn is the original pass – at the time the pass was so narrow, it was only open to traffic in one direction each day. Travellers waiting for their turn used to outspan in the Hotel’s ground.

In 1888 the Hotel’s reception building was built as a manager’s residence for the first sawmill in the area. In 1946 the buildings were extended and the Tzitzikama Forest Inn opened.

The original Assegaaibosch Hotel outside Kareedouw was built in 1866. It was a popular pit stop for weary Voortrekkers in need of rest, regrouping, and a good quaffing session to see them on their way again. Intriguing tales about the colourful characters who once lifted a glass at the hotel have been retold through the years and are yours to discover when you visit.

The hotel was rebuilt some years later, but it was only restored to its full potential when Anton Ge**er purchased it in 2004. Anton has lovingly refurbished the charming old Assegaaibosch Hotel, adding space and style to its former glory, and creating the Assegaaibosch Country Lodge, an oasis where history meets luxury and comfort.

Birder - the acceptable term used to describe the person who seriously pursues the hobby of birding. May be professional or amateur.

Bird-watcher - rather ambiguous term used to describe the person who watches birds for any reason at all, and should not be used to refer to the serious birder.

Twitcher - a birdwatcher whose main aim is to collect sightings of rare birds.

Ornithophile - a person who loves birds; a bird-lover.

All of the above will absolutely love Birds of Eden, the Tsitsikamma's world-renowned free-flight aviary that stands as the largest of its kind globally. Nestled within 2.3 hectares of partially forested terrain at the Crags, Birds of Eden is enveloped by a 3.2-hectare mesh and features a 1.2-kilometre walkway.

With the freedom to explore at your own pace or opt for a complimentary guided tour, visitors are treated to an immersive experience among 220 diverse bird species, totalling over 3500 individual birds. Definitely a must for any birder, bird watcher, twitcher and ornithophile.

The Bloukrans Pass has got to be one of the most scenic gorge passes around with its overhanging canopy, towering rock cliffs and overhanging forest canopy. Construction on the pass built by Thomas Bain started in 1879 using convict labour and was completed in 1883.

Flood damage in 2007 led to the official closing of the pass but it is possible to drive through in a car. Although the road on the Western Cape side of the pass was recently repaired, the Eastern Cape side has been reduced to a narrow strip due to rock slides and the crumbling road. If you do attempt it, please drive slowly and keep an eye out for other cars, cyclists and hikers coming from the other side.
