These small birds perch on the animals to feed on ticks and parasites, providing a natural pest control service. In return, the animals benefit from reduced parasite loads, while the oxpeckers get a steady food supply. It’s 5am and the phone rings. It’s a friendly wake-up call from your wildlife ranger who is waiting to take you on your first sunrise safari. By the time your head has caught up with your body you realise you are sitting in a rumbling, roofless 4x4 with the fresh morning air splashing your cheeks. The Garden Route is a much-loved road trip that stretches along the south-eastern coast of South Africa. The route got its name from the incredibly diverse vegetation encountered in these parts with the landscape made up of forests, lakes, lagoons and, of course, the rugged coastline. Set deep in the heart of a rare and beautiful dry sand forest, the award-winning Phinda Forest Lodge fuses architecture and conservation. The lodge was hand built by local artisans, with a minimal footprint on the forest floor – not one tree was felled during construction. An exquisite contradiction, floor-to-ceiling glass walls invite the forest inside, while the dense tree canopy shelters and provides privacy. Floating on stilts above the forest floor while dainty suni graze below, the 16 Zulu Zen suites blend harmoniously into the dappled shade. 🐾 Etosha National Park is in northwestern Namibia and is one of Africa’s largest national parks. What makes this an incredibly unique safari destination is the massive white salt pan that covers over 20 percent of the park’s surface area; this is Africa’s largest salt pan that is so large in fact, it can be seen from space! During very rainy seasons in the park, parts of the pan form a lake attracting thousands of migrating flamingos. The safari experience is fantastic with an abundance of wildlife (up to 100 mammal species and 340 species of birds) all which can be viewed in close proximity from your 4x4 vehicle with the knowledge and safety of your expert wildlife guide. Spend your days on the lookout for elephants, giraffe, lions, rhinos in the wonder that is Etosha National Park. 🐾

✨ The African elephant is the largest animal roaming the earth and their most recognisable features are their long trunks, large ears, and fearsome tusks. Unfortunately, it is the latter attribute that has contributed to the massive decline of this species because of poachers who are driven by the illegal ivory trade. Another threat to their survival is a growing human population. As our numbers increase, the need for more land increases, which in turn decreases the land for the elephants. A lack of resources leads to elephants destroying agricultural land, which puts them at risk from human conflict. A huge part of African elephant conservation is collaborating with local communities to assist them with effectively managing conflict with the species. 🐘❤️ With the help of the tracker and the game ranger; we managed to find this guy. Trackers are highly skilled professionals who sit at the front of the vehicle and read the surrounding environment for signs of wildlife. The tracker and ranger work together as a team and it is often their synergy that deliver sightings of animals large and small. Most trackers choose this profession as they have grown up in surrounding villages and are well educated in the land and wildlife.🐾 What a sighting!
