I have the most wonderful memories of fishing along the river as a child. ICU cold morning starts, baby sister annoyingly in tow. River side camping. Gum boots overflowing with frigid water after dad snuck up and pushed me in. Mid day tubing chaos. Reeling in MASSIVE (probably underweight) fish. The big one that got away tales. And mum frying up my final haul for all to share a little forkful at the end of the day. It was such fun. So peaceful.

✨𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝑴𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓✨ Founded in 1954 by a group of forward-thinking farmers, the Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club was created to offer the public access to exceptional fishing on private properties. Over the years, the club has grown and now controls around 16 still waters and 14 river beats, stretching over 60 km along the Umzimkulu and Pholela Rivers.

The club’s still waters are regularly stocked with rainbow trout, and in some, 10% of the stock is brown trout. The river fishing, however, is entirely natural, with the rainbow trout population being self-sustaining and in perfect equilibrium, meaning all fish in the rivers are wild. In addition, several still waters feature bass populations. Once stocked, the fish are left to grow and thrive naturally, requiring anglers to use skill and strategy to catch them. The club provides boats for anglers at no extra charge on most dams.

🌌 How to See the Planets Without a PhD in Astrophysics 🌌

Hey stargazers and accidental astronomers! If you’ve ever wanted to impress your friends by pointing at the sky and saying, “Ah yes, that’s Venus, obviously,” then this is your moment!

This week, a spectacular planetary alignment is happening, and you can see it right here from Glentowy Farm in Underberg—no telescope, no NASA training, just your eyeballs and a little bit of direction (literally).

Step 1: Know When to Look

⏳ Best Time: Just after sunset (7:00–9:30 PM)
🌅 Best Spot: Somewhere with a clear view of the western horizon—no trees, no mountains, and definitely no cows blocking your line of sight.

Step 2: Know Where to Look

👀 Face West (that’s where the sun sets—helpful hint: if you’re standing with your back to the Drakensberg Mountains, you’re facing roughly west).

Step 3: What You’ll See

✨ Venus – The bright show-off! You’ll spot it first, shining like it owns the place.
🪐 Saturn – Hanging out near Venus, but a telescope would help see the rings.
🌟 Jupiter – Big and bright, a little higher up in the sky.
🔴 Mars – Reddish and looking moody as usual.
🔭 Uranus & Neptune – If your eyesight is basically superhero level, you might catch them (or use binoculars).

Step 4: Make It More Fun

🔥 Bring a flask of something warm (or strong—no judgment).
📸 Take a photo (even if it’s just of your confused friends staring at the sky).

Get Ready — A planetary alignment is happening. Here's how to watch:

The much-anticipated planet alignment of 2025 has started. To catch this celestial alignment, look toward the southwestern horizon as twilight gives way to darkness.

Venus and Saturn will dazzle together, with Venus shining as the brighter beacon. Above them, Jupiter, recently past its opposition, radiates as the second brightest point of light after Venus, offering an excellent opportunity for naked-eye observation.

Mars, with its signature red glow, is unmissable near the eastern horizon. This January is a prime time for viewing the Red Planet, as it grows brighter ahead of its closest approach to Earth in over two years. That peaked on January 15, when it reached opposition. However, the views will be spectacular for a few more weeks.

For those with a telescope or binoculars, Uranus can be spotted near Jupiter, while Neptune sits close to Venus and Saturn, completing this celestial spectacle.
