Let us draw you into the world of the African bush, where Mother Nature rules, and all her subjects follow the rhythm of life in the wilderness. It can be a savage, harsh place, raw but exquisitely beautiful. Its a world where your senses become heightened, the dry smell of the dust hanging in the motionless air, the oppressive heaviness of the air around you as the storm clouds gather, the sweet

relief and aroma of the raindrops as they hit the parched earth, rolling thunder across the plains and a shiny new world washed fresh and renewed after the rain.

🚨 URGENT APPEAL 🚨

Gweru SPCA is calling on all corporates, local and international, to help us continue our mission of providing care for animals in need. We urgently need a monthly sponsorship of $500 to cover our veterinary fees. This will enable us to spay, castrate, vaccinate, and treat wounds for the animals in our care, including cats, dogs, goats, donkeys, and cattle.
Recently, we were left in a difficult situation when a large mine and a rural hospital reneged on their promise to support our capture/sterilization/release program for excess cats. We now have over 20 cats that need to be sterilized and vaccinated before finding a suitable release site. Some of these cats are taming, but most are feral. It would be heartbreaking to have to put these beautiful cats to sleep.
Our dog surrenders have also included several pregnant females who were too far along in their pregnancies to be aborted. We also often receive strays who turn out to be pregnant, and we are hesitant to abort at that stage. Your donations will provide prompt veterinary care for vaccinations and sterilizations, ensuring that these animals receive the best possible care. Please help us continue our vital work by donating today.
Thank you for your support.

Craig Rix, started Travel Africa in Bulawayo.

We've just returned from a two and a half week trip from the UK to Zimbabwe to see our family, and what a magnificent time we had! Amidst the devastation caused by the global pandemic, we saw so many shoots of hope and enthusiasm for the future amongst everyone we met and all the places we travelled to - it was a hugely uplifting trip. We'd like to share some of our highlights over the next week or so, in the hope that it encourages as many of you as possible to take the plunge and get back out there. We loved it!

Airports were easy, officials were all friendly and helpful, and everything ticked along smoothly. Smiling faces, huge blue skies and a full rainbow greeted us at the Victoria Falls, the mist helping to cool us down.

The first night of our trip was extraordinary in so many ways - a first glimpse of elephants for the 2 'newbies' in our group, and an emotional reconnection with Africa for the rest of us. To breath in the warm, fresh smell of our homeland was wonderful. Staff at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge went out of their way to make our overnight stay fun and relaxed.

GONAREZOU – a conservation success story and iconic wilderness destination for those seeking true wilderness

06/01/2022

An African extravaganza 🤩🦓

Everyone knows about East Africa’s wildebeest migration… but how many of you know about Botswana’s Nxai Pan zebra migration which consists of plains zebras (formerly known as Burchell’s zebras)?

During the rainy season, several thousand zebras head for Nxai Pan National Park from Chobe National Park and the adjacent Salambala Conservancy in Namibia.

This migration has gone unnoticed for quite some time, and conservationists still don’t know everything about these dazzling animals, but we’re glad that Botswana’s Burchelle’s Zebra migration will now be being researched more and more 😁

BIG NEWS FOR Sangha Lodge…. We are finally reopening after close to 2 years…. Please help us spread the word. The best way to help anyone in tourism now is to travel…. We need the world to return to a form of normal that we can work with.
Like most people that depend on tourism, the last 2 years have been extremely tough on all of us. With the onset of Covid in March 2020 the park authority closed the park without any notice and we have remained closed since then. As we are involved in many different projects here we have had to survive with little chance to move for the 2 years. When covid hit, I was on a marketing trip and got caught short in South Africa while Tamar was stuck at the lodge. The situation was very difficult but we made it through and I eventually could join her back here and arrived on October 1 2020. I have been here ever since. Not that we are complaining at all, we do live in Paradise, and our home is ideal for anyone who like us loves to be in the wild.

During this time, we have carried on with some of our pangolin work. Tessa Ullman is still here working with the communities and doing research for us and herself, Tamar has rescued several pangolins, and right now still follows one regularly, and has gathered some amazing data.
This is our last pangolin being followed by the team and we expect to leave her to her own devices in the coming months. We normally follow young hand reared pangolins for a year with regular health check until we are comfortable that they will survive.
Tam and Tessa have worked extensively on a camera trap program to try and find arboreal pangolin at potential sites in our concession and although we had some success with white bellied pangolins, Giant and black bellied pangolins still elude our camera traps. The by catch of this trapping has become a pet project of ours, and has turned up many species of mammals and birds new for the park. What is especially interest are the records from our arboreal cameras, where we have now recorded 5 of the 7 known species of Anomalure…[these are incredible flying rodents] Prior to our program 2 species were known until Vladimir Dinets discovered a third, Cameroon scaly-tail on a night walk… we have added lesser anomalure and a species of flying mouse to the list, as well as many more records of Cameroon scaly-tail.
Adding to the list of mammals we have found has been fun. The total list of mammals for the park is now over 100 species, bird list numbers over 400 while snake records are over 100 recorded.
I have also been involved gathering data on Bats for Bat Conservation International [BCI] and have recorded a few new species for the park in this time, the equipment that BCI have provided has really helped, with some very cool acoustic monitoring systems as well as a Bat detector.
Another piece of Equipment we acquired just prior to lockdown was a Thermal imaging camera. This was planned partly for night walks and partly to help with Nocturnal monitoring of pangolins. Learning to get the most out of this has been interesting and we have some awesome videos and pictures of some really cool nocturnal animals.
Further to this Tessa Ullman has also worked tirelessly over the last year on the Community Pangolin Monitoring program which has gone from strength to strength and we are really proud of this program and of her. Her reach out every week to different villages in the reserve is showing huge potential develop into a model program. More on this later, watch this space.
THE FUTURE
What the coming year holds who can tell, but we hope that with your support we can have a growing number of visitors. Every single visitor contributes largely to the wellbeing of so many people, which in turn helps promote conservation and a positive vibe for the reserve.

We sincerely hope that we will see more of you visit us in the coming year.
Warm regards from our piece of paradise.

Rod and Tam.
