KTM 500: The Ultimate Lightweight Adventure Bike?

Having embarked on numerous adventure trips on the KTM 500, I can assert that for me it is the preferred choice over my other bikes—namely the Husqvarna 901 Norden Expedition and BMW GSA 1250. As the owner and co-founder of Tuli Tours Africa PTY, I’ve found the KTM 500 to be the best option for navigating challenging terrains. Its lightweight design and user-friendly handling inspire immense confidence, allowing riders to tackle technical sections with ease. Although not as good an option for the very long distance less technical rides where the BMW GSA 1250 worked for Johannesburg to Cape Town, or Joburg to Victoria Falls all tar routes, the 901 Expedition is the weapon of choice for a long 650km plus tar ride before arriving at some serious off-road technical stuff.

In an exciting development, I’ve been asked to organize an exclusive KTM 500 tour to Botswana in March 2025. This tour promises to showcase the bike's capabilities in some of the most stunning landscapes Southern Africa has to offer. We’ll be riding through private concessions not open to the public, traversing wildlife-rich areas while staying in a range of top bush camps and unfenced game lodges in Botswana and Limpopo, South Africa. While the manufacturer recommends oil service intervals every 15 hours on the KTM 500, on a recent 1800km 6 day private tour with a guest from USA, I’ve discovered that when riding in adventure conditions rather than racing, these intervals can easily be extended to 20 or even 30 hours, or roughly 2500 km, depending on what average speed is maintained. (80 – 120km/hour is easy riding for the KTM 500) This durability adds to the KTM 500's appeal, making it not just a bike, but a reliable partner in exploration.

Day three of another epic Botswana Tour!! It just gets better and better. Weather is near perfect and great game viewing off the bikes today. After roughing it at the wild Limpopo River Bushcamp, we have a night in the lap of luxury with private pool, and outside, under the stars bath tub, here at Mopani Camp, Mapesu Private Game Reserve, which now boasts a pride of lions, increased herds of Elephants and buffalo as well as Cheetah and Wild Dog! Life is good!
