📍Timbavati Game Reserve The aim of Umlani is to offer our guests a true African adventure and long lasting memories.

Umlani Bushcamp, a rustic yet exclusive lodge, accommodates 16 guests in cosy en-suite reed and thatch rondavels. Umlani's philosophy of simplistic luxury and 'getting back to nature' is enhanced by the romance of operating without electricity, so each hut and the entire camp is lit by candlelight and oil lamps, providing a warm and romantic atmosphere. Early morning and evening game drives are in

open four wheel drive vehicles accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers. A traversing area of more than 10 000 hectares with over 40 mammal and 350 bird species, makes for an exceptional wildlife experience. Umlani makes the whole event personalised and specialises in escorted walks into this unspoiled wilderness. Umlani, meaning Place of Rest, was established in 1990 by Marco and Marie-Louise Schiess, in the central section of the Timbavati Nature Reserve, which is part of the greater Kruger National Park.

Wild dog wednesday!

DID YOU KNOW, that there is a study which found that a pack of wild dogs have a unique way of deciding when to go on a hunt… they vote by sneezing! Pack members will sneeze, and if enough sneezes are heard, the pack moves forward with the hunt. This fascinating behavior shows their highly social and cooperative nature.

Throwback thursday pt. 1

We have gathered some awesome footage of past moments at umlani.

Slide 1: Throwback to about 2016 when we went to the treehouse to set it up for guests to stay and found leopardess Nyeleti inside. Ever since then the treehouse has got an upgrade to how it is still to this day (with no leopard found in there anymore 😉)

Slide 2: Not so tiny Nyeleti anymore. She became a very well known, fierce and very relaxed leopardess and is very much loved. She has left quite the legacy in the past 10 years in our area. To name a few of her offspring: Nweti, Dzindza, Ntsongwana, Xigodo, Rihati and many more, which are also a regular sight around here.

Umlani Bushcamp is located in the Timbavati Nature Reserve, part of a block of private reserves that border Kruger National Park. This getaway includes accommodation for two adults in a double room, all meals, local brand drinks, optional daily walk and two game drives per day.

Two weeks ago, the entire Umlani team came together to celebrate the Christmas season and reflect on a year that was both rewarding and full of hard work. Did you know about the ‚flehmen grimace‘? The flehmen grimace is an example of a facial expression in mammals. It is usually performed by males in a reaction to the urine of females. The head is tilted upwards, the top lip is pulled up and backwards, exposing the top teeth. During this process the urine is ‚tested‘ for pheromones. These are scented and tasted by the male’s Jacobson’s organ at the base of the nostrils, inside the mouth at the back of the palate.
