"Living abroad - especially in New York - it's an absolute dream. But, being out of your comfort zone is one of the biggest challenges that you can face.

So, to have a successful experience, it's so important to keep up your mental health! So, I would like to share with you some tips that have been working a lot for me:

1- The cliche: having a good relationship with your host family will support you through your hardest times.
2- Be social! We have monthly cluster meetings which are an amazing opportunity to get to know new friends.
3- Be involved in the community that you are living in! In my town we have tons of activities that we can sign up through the community. Currently I play volleyball every Thursday night, it's so fun and I had the opportunity to get to know a lot of people that live near me.
4- Have a piece of your country with you ! Sharing your experience with your family and friends from your home country, bake a goodie that reminds your childhood or even go to a market or a church from your culture. It keeps us connected to ourselves
5- Be active! Going to the gym, practicing sports and activities that you enjoy and, my favourite, making plans to get to know new places. It keeps our mind busy and gives us memories that we will never forget!

"I always tell everyone that matching with a host family is like matching with a boy/girlfriend. Because, for both cases, the most important things is: you need to know what YOU want! What kind of relationship you wanna build? What kind of things you'd like to do? What kind of lifestyle do you want to have? Having a successful matching starts with you!

I remember when my current Host Family showed up on my profile. My first thought was: 2 babies and a toddler? No way!!! I scheduled the call just to finish the business, and Michele and I spent 1 hour and a half talking! It was love at the first video call LOL! 2 days later we matched, and we have been having an AWESOME time together, they are my family!

Be open! Be open to the location and to the quantity of kids and their ages. Because, in the end, having a good relationship with the family is all that matters! I am sure you will figure out any problem together with a good and open communication :)"

"First of all, Arriving in New York??? What a dream!!

And then, all the other trips I have done, in almost 10 months here I have visited 10 states and 5 other countries (BY MYSELF), things that in my reality back in Brazil was impossible but now here I’m being able to experience.

What I’m trying to say is that nothing is impossible if you believe you’re capable of doing it!

Be prepared to live your biggest dreams, to face your fears, learn about new cultures, experiences the cold like you maybe never did, drive in another country with some rules different than yours, be open to make new friends where you're gonna live and in this countries you visit too, be prepared to cry, to laugh, but, be prepared to make this the best year of your life.

I can’t wait for my next adventures! What about you?

Is my last day here but feel free to reach out to me on my profile"

"It’s me again, on this post I want to share a little bit about my relationship with my host family. It took me 3 months and a lot of other families till I found my current family.

I live with my Host Mom, Host Dad, Host Kid, 1 dog and 2 cats. They are literally my family. We have the best connection ever since day one. But why am I mentioning that?

When it comes about choosing the right family I remember the feeling, how I was scared of the English, not being good enough, maybe saying the wrong thing and everything else, but put in mind that you just need to be yourself, my host mom always says that what made them choose me is that I’m just myself (I’m a little bit crazy in a good way, their words). Remember that having a good relationship with the people you intend to live for this 1/2 years make everything even better. We always let ourselves know how grateful we are for having each other, they always makes me feel loved and appreciated, I’m so thankful for them and for having the opportunity to live this experience!

I’m gonna talk more about this in the stories so feel free to ask your questions! 💗"

"Oi APIA followers! How are you doing?

I’m Yaritza (I know, It’s different, but you can call me Yari) , I’m 24 years old and I’m from the Capital of the biggest city in Brazil, São Paulo. 🇧🇷 I’ve been living a dream for 9 months in Louisville, Kentucky. (I’m in the process to extend with my current host family, we are family!!!).

Living in USA was always a dream and I have been working on this since I was 14 years when I started studying English, 10 years later and here I am, it has been the craziest (in a good way) but at the same time the best experience of my life.

I’m here to show you a little bit about this adventure and to answer your questions, I’m gonna be here for the next few days so feel free to contact me here or on my Instagram 🩷"
