Raggies on the Reef! 🦈🪸

Protea Banks - A renowned offshore reef located approximately 7.5 km off the coast of Shelly Beach in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This submerged shoal spans about 6 km in length and 800 meters in width, with depths averaging around 30 meters. Recognized as one of South Africa's premier shark diving destinations, Protea Banks offers divers the opportunity to encounter a diverse array of shark species, including Zambezi (bull) sharks, tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, and ragged-tooth sharks. The reefs rich marine biodiversity is further highlighted by sightings of pelagic fish such as tuna, kingfish, and barracudas. Additionally, during the annual Sardine Run in June and July, massive sardine schools migrate through the area, attracting various predators and offering a unique spectacle for divers. Due to the depth and potential for strong currents, diving at Protea Banks is recommended for advanced divers. The reef is accessible via a brief boat ride from Shelly Beach, making it a convenient and thrilling destination for those seeking exhilarating underwater experiences.
