๐Ÿšจ "White Zulu" ๐Ÿšจ

โœ๏ธ Johnny Clegg (born 07 June 1953 Becup near Rochdale in England and died 16 July 2019 in Johannesburg South Africa) was a South African musician, popularly called the "White Zulu". His innovative ethnically integrated musical collaborations in the late 20th century constituted a powerful statement against apartheid, the enforced separation of Black and white people and traditions in South Africa.

โœ๏ธ Although born in England, Clegg was raised in Southern Africa. When he was a small child, he moved with his mother to her homeland, Zimbabwe where he met and married a South African Journalist. The family then moved to Johannesburg. Clegg's home environment was both musical and politically liberal; his stepfather was an anti-apartheid crime reporter with a serious interest in Black African culture and his mother was a cabaret singer. As a young adult, Clegg studied anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand and after receiving a master's degree he taught at the institution for sevaral years. During his time at the University he was able to cultivate both his academic and his practical involvement with the arts and culture of the local zulu population. In the 1970s he left his teaching position to focus on musical pursuits with the ultimate aim of creating a blend of with and Black South African artists tradition.

โœ๏ธ Johnny Clegg subsequently developed a friendship with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu migrant worker and street musician in Johannesburg from Mchunu, Clegg learned the Zulu language and traditional music as well as the vibrant dance styles that later became a regular feature of his performances. Clegg and Mchunu parformed as a duo for a few years before they assembled a band called Juluka released Universal Men, and album that spoke to the divided lives of the migrant workers who reside and work in the city, separated from their families and homes. Stylistically the album was a fusion of Zulu music and various European traditions.

๐Ÿšจ "There is only one race, the human race"

โœ๏ธ Robert Sobukwe founded the Pan Africanist Congress in 1959 and was it's president.

โœ๏ธ Following Sebukwe's arrest after the Sharpville massacre, he was charged with and convinced of incitement, sentenced to three years in prison. He served one year of his sentence in Witbank Prison (1960-1961) followed by two years in Pretoria Gaol (1961-1963).

โœ๏ธ Sobukwe was regarded as a strong proponent of an Africanist future of South Africa and opposed political collaboration with anyone other than Africans, defining "African" as anyone who lives in and pays allegiance to Africa and who is prepared to subject themselves to African mojority rule. In March 1960, Sobukwe organized and launched a non-violent protest campaign against pass laws for which he was sentenced to three years in prison on grounds of incitement. In 1963 the enactment of the "Sobukwe Clause" allowed an indefinite renewal of his prison sentence and Sobukwe was subsequently relocated to Robben Island for solitary confinement. At the end of his sixth year at Robben Island he was released and placed under house arrest until his death in 1978.

โœ๏ธ As authorities recognized Sobukwe's deteriorating physical and mental health, he was released from Robben Island in 1969. Sobukwe was allowed to live in Kimberly with his family but remained under house arrest. Kimberly was suggested as an area where he could not easily foster subversive activities and also a place where he could live and work while being easily monitored by the state. He was also restricted through a banning order, which disallowed political activities.

โœ๏ธ Various restrictions barred Sobukwe from travelling overseas, thus curtailing his attempts to further his education. For this same reason, he had to turn down sevaral positions as a teacher at various locations in the United States. Sobukwe completed his law degree with the help of a local lawyer in Galeshewe, and he then started his own practice...

๐Ÿšจ Sophiatown๐Ÿšจ

โœ๏ธ Sophiatown also known as Sof'town or Kofifi, is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sophiatown was a poor multi-racial area and a black cultural hub that was destroyed under apartheid. It produced some of South Africa's most famous writers, musicians, politicians and artists like Father Huddleston, Can Themba...

โœ๏ธ Sophiatown-The site of forced removals when in 1955 55000 people were forcibly removed to what become Soweto. Where the first seeds of "the struggle" were sewn.

โœ๏ธ Rebuild as a whites only area under the name of Triomf "Triumph" in the 1960s, in 2006 it was officially returned to its original name. Sophiatown was one of the oldest black areas in Johannesburg and its destruction represented some of the excesses of South Africa under apartheid.

๐Ÿšจ Madonna of the Township ๐Ÿšจ

โœ๏ธ Brenda Nokuzola Fassie (03 November 1964 - 09 May 2004) was a South African singer, songwriter, dancer and activist. Affectionately called MaBrrr by her fans, she is also known as the "Queen of African Pop", the "Madonna of Township" or simply as The Black Madonna. Her bold stage antics earned a reputation for "outrageousness".

โœ๏ธ Brenda Fassie was born in Langa, Cape Town, the youngest of nine children. He father died when she was only two years old; with the help of her Mother, a pianist, she soon started earning money by singing for tourists.

โœ๏ธ When she was 16 years old in 1981, she received a visit by Hendrick "Koloi" Lebona. As a result, she left Cape Town for Soweto, JHB to seek her fortune as a singer. MaBrrr first joined the vocal group Joy (filling in for one of the members who was on maternity leave) and later became the lead singer for a township music group called Brenda and the Big Dudes. She had a son, Bongani in 1985 by a fellow Big Dudes musician. She married Nhlanhla Mbambo in 1989 but the pair divorced in 1991. Around this time she became addicted to co***ne and her career suffered as a result.

โœ๏ธ With very outspoken view and frequent visit to the poorer townships of JHB as well as songs about life in the townships, Brenda enjoyed tremendous popularity. She also used her music to oppose the apartheid regime in Mzansi. In 1990 she released the song "Black President" as a tribute to Nelson Mandela a political prisoner and leter the first Black president of Mzansi. Known best for her songs "Weekend Special" and Too Late for Mama" Fassie was dubbed "The Madonna of Township" by Time magazine in 2001.

โœ๏ธ In 1995 she was discovered in a hotel with the body of her female lover, Poppie Sihlahla who had died of an apparent overdose. MaBrrr underwent rehabilitation and got her career back on track. However she still had drug problems, returned to drug rehabilitation clinic about 30 times in her life.
