WATER SPORT:
The West Coast is well-known for its variety of water sports like snorkelling, diving, boating, skiing, canoeing, kayaking, yachting, wind and kite surfing and deep sea fishing. Port Owen and Admiral Island is famous among yachtsmen all over the world. There are few places where you can step from your house onto a yacht and within minutes you could be sailing on the crystal blue Atlantic Ocean, or instead go inward bound. The bay into which the Berg River runs, is well known as to be one of the most calm and safe areas on the stormy Atlantic coast on the southern part of Africa. This river then gives entrance to the canal with the house sitting on the banks of the canal. The jetty gives access from the house directly onto the water, where a boat can be safely moored, is another attraction for boat lovers. BIRDING HOTSPOT:
This Velddrif site, on the estuary of the Berg River, is a proposed RAMSAR site. This is deemed to be one of the 5 most popilar birding sites in the world and the wide variety of birds that can be seen here, is testimony to that. There is a bird hide and boardwalk in the town, on the R399 towards Piketberg, and opens from 09H00 to 21H00. This hide overlooks an area of tidal mudflats and salt marshes where more than 200 species of birds can be viewed. Common species include Eastern White Pelicans, Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Pied Malachites and Giant Kingfishers. This lower area of the Berg River has become known as the “hotspot” for rare waders. There are few if any other areas in the entire country where so many rare water birds can be seen. Recent rarities include the Little Blue Heron, Hudsonian Godwit, Black Harrier and Lesser Yellowlegs. There is another hide which is situated a little upriver from the famous “Bokkom Avenue” area which is only accessible via boat. Should you travel a little further upriver with the boat and pass underneath the railway bridge, the chances are good that you might even run into the elusive fish eagle and hear their cries that reminds you of the unspoilt African wilderness. FOR THE FLOWER ENTHUSIAST:
In August and September, the wildflower displays on the Cape West Coast and the Northern Cape are considered to be among the best in the world. Port Owen can be used as a base from which to view the splendor nature has to offer on the southern part of the West Coast, as many flower hotspots are within easy reach. These are some of the best spots for viewing this abundance of colour.
