HERBALISM IS LIFE CHANGING. If I lost you in that sentence, then what we have to offer is maybe not for you. The practice of Holistic Herbalism offers an approach to good health that is neglected in modern medicine - the safe, but profound healing of the whole, built around plants, but integrating all disciplines, rather than the curing of specific symptoms with high powered, targeted and often ha

rmful, drugs. Put differently, it is a way to assist your body to better health using natural processes and herbs, whilst taking full advantage of ancient healing wisdom and all modern day diagnostic and other medical advances. It is the Art and Science of good health. The journey into herbalism, for those in the right frame of mind, is exciting, but also bewildering in its complexity and options. We hope to help you navigate your Plant Path by offering our ever evolving insights, understandings and knowledge, as well as the necessary tools of the trade so that you can practically take responsibility for your own health and the health of your loved ones. Visit our scenic gardens landscaped with a wide range of healing, edible and decorative plants, with snapshot description to give you some insights in how each might benefit you. Complimentary to this is our plant nursery where you can purchase some of these gems and a small, but growing selection of other herbal products, supplies and equipment for the serious herbalist. To tie it all together, we offer workshops, talks and plant tours to pique your interest, grow your knowledge and to help you become a better healer. We like to think that the setting is food for the soul and a panacea for the spirit. You will have to come test this for yourself!

This is our story …

A conjunction of circumstances, events, desires, people, principles, personalities, knowledge, life philosophies, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, the tangible and intangible and much more has brought us here. There is excitement and there is fear because from this point on things will not be the same. This is the change and path we imagined, mulled over, fought over, cried over and need in the deepest parts of what makes us who we are. There is no turning back.

KIRONIA HERBAL GARDENS IS NOW OPEN.

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately we've had to postpone our herbal workshop on Chamomile to Saturday 4 February. Things should begin to run more smoothly now. We aim to host a workshop every Saturday, initially focusing on herbs we perceive as crucial to everyone's home apothecary, but later shifting to address your specific needs as we get to know you better.

Regards,

Yeah, we've fallen off the radar for a few months. Sorry.

As promised, we hosted a herbal plants stall at the Walkerville Agricultural show in September, made some decent sales and met many interesting people. It was sobering that so many of our visitors were suffering from life changing medical conditions and just wanted to feel better. I know herbalism is a big part of the answer; I just wish we were a bit further along on our journey. It is frustrating to have some of the answers, but by no means all that is necessary.

The Grand Opening of October did unfortunately not happen. Three months later, we are instead opting to throw the proverbial doors to our gardens open, without too much fanfare and to start hosting herbal talks and workshops. Not a running start, but maybe a brisk walk.

We will be open for visitors from next week.
Monday to Friday: 9am to 4pm
Saturdays: 9am to 1pm
Sundays: CLOSED

Disclaimer: We don’t not claim all-encompassing knowledge of herbs and herbalism and, frankly, view those that do (on any subject) with righteous and justified suspicion. Some herbs are 100% safe and we don’t mind recommending those for children or anyone’s 110 year old great grandmother – they will not cause harm. Other’s should be used with caution, the same way you won’t give an aspirin to someone with a bleeding disorder or low blood-pressure and that an expecting mother will give up drinking for 9 months – these are sensible precautions. Then there are those plants that demand respect – they can kill you or at least make you feel very sorry. If these are used, it should be under the supervision of a doctor or a very experienced clinical herbalist; which we are not and do not claim to be. PLEASE DON’T BE STUPID – there are many resources out there to guide you and we hope to provide some in due course. If still in doubt, don’t do it!

HERBS OR ERBS?
Or “TO HAITCH OR NOT TO HAITCH”

It has been nails across the chalkboard of my soul every time I hear the word Herb pronounced as ‘erb’ by the (thankfully) oh-so-prolific herbalism content producers in the States. I correctly deduced (based on knowledge from a friend who did a linguistics course) that this word was a snapshot of the spoken English, a fad of the time when the British crown was colonizing the Americas. Where I got it wrong was in thinking that the more correct pronunciation would be herb with a capital Haitch. From the Middle Ages herbs were indeed erbs to all English speakers (from the French erbe), until the 19th century when the pronounced H made its comeback. This was a bit of snobby switch (that did not make it across the Atlantic), as the pronounced H did a curtain call when the upper crust linguistically decided to separate from Cockney’s and other plebs who lived in ‘ouses.
The influx of the English into Africa must have been at the time when the Haitch was firmly back in the saddle. The use of the word erb in South Africa is still followed by a puzzled looks and several question marks. Rather than admitting I’m firmly set in at least some of my ways, I will stick with the word herb with an Haitch, in the firm believe that the Latin usage, predating the middle ages, is the correct one – herb from the Latin herba it will be for me. It is, after all the Hour to be Honest for all Heirs to Herbal wisdom.
All that remains in question is whether the Afrikaans should be ‘Kruie’ or ‘Kruiden’ …
