Happy Friday everyone! As we head into a long weekend, let’s take a moment to remember the significance of Youth Day in South Africa. On June 16th we honor the brave students who stood up for their rights in 1976. Their courage and sacrifice paved the way for a better future. Enjoy the weekend and let’s never forget the power of youth and their role in shaping this country!

Fall in Boven (or are we already in winter??) is the perfect time for long hikes or epic climbing days and then a nice long bath and board games around the fire! The sun is nice and warm during the day so outdoor activities are still wonderful - and even better now than in the dead heat of summer!

For me the best part of the Tiny House is that you’re encouraged to be outside to use all the great outside spaces! Too many days I find the whole day has gone by and I’ve been indoors the whole time. By organizing your living space in a way that incentives getting outside, you naturally spend more time out in the fresh air without even thinking about it!

Happy belated Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there - including those friends who acted like a mama and took care of me just the same!! Lots of love! We started out our day with a hike to our spot that we lovingly call “Mindfulness Sundays” after our lock down tradition of having a picnic breakfast out there on Sunday mornings. Then we had a delicious lunch and I was so much enjoying the food and the company that I only have a picture of my empty plate! You know your meal was good when your empty plate is that colourful :)
When you’re trying to take a pretty picture of the ponds and your 6 year old won’t move off of the fence, it becomes a Cyrus photo shoot!
The outdoors are calling! Open the doors, smell the fresh air, feel the pine needles under your feet. Catch that last fish, start the braai or take an evening stroll around the dams. Inhale. Exhale. Smile. Repeat.

The kids saved a chameleon that was tangled in the net at the chicken coop and fell in love! They made him (or her) a nice outside castle where he stayed for the afternoon and then set him free in the garden. They hoped he would stay in the garden but by the next day he was too camouflaged for us to find him again :)

Sunset summer walks. Sometimes it gets a bit trying living and working in the countryside with our little family. Life always seems a bit more complicated and we don’t have the comforts of the city with food delivery and easy access to things like a dentist. And sometimes a walk home on a summer evening makes it all worthwhile. I can only hope that this experience is good for these little humans and that being surrounded by trees and mountains is being imprinted in their brains.
After many years of wanting to do this we have finally put in a new bathtub and new tiling in Pine Cottage! Woohoo! It is a beautiful big new bathtub with slopes on both sides so enough room for you and your honey :)
So excited that Elna and Monique had a great time celebrating their collective birthdays with a special weekend away in the Tegwaan Tipi!

Balthazar’s sourdough process continues! Normally on Saturdays Balthazar does the final scoring and baking (best done in rainbow tie dye long johns!). The Rock Fairies Waterfall hike is 9 km (3.5 hrs) starting from Tegwaan crossing the plateau, dropping down the escarpment, traversing the hillside through an indigenous forest and then following the river upstream to the 50m waterfall. It’s a beautiful and invigorating hike! The varied microclimates, flora and fauna provide a stunning journey along the landscape. Free for day visitors and guests alike!

These stone walled structures stretch from Delmas in South Africa all the way to Great Zimbabwe. The area around Emgwenya is covered with tons of these structure, many of which you can only see in the winter when the grass is low. They include lines, circles, waves, contours - no single arrangement looks alike, each with their own personality. Some look like circular rooms with doorways, some like cattle corrals, some areas look like great places to garden, and some very clearly look like roads or channels but they are not smooth so would be a bit hard to even move along. The most common explanation (and there are many!) is that the Bokoni people built them from the 16th-17th centuries and were a flourishing agricultural society in an area which was long thought to be devoid of large cultural advancements. #stonecircles #bokoni #archaeology #emgwenya #watervalboven
