Balthazar’s sourdough process continues! Normally on Saturdays Balthazar does the final scoring and baking (best done in rainbow tie dye long johns!). And then we eat fresh bread all day :)

Fridays have a certain rhythm to them as we get ready for weekend guests and Balthazar starts his sourdough process! Balthazar’s sourdough process is definitely a labor of love that takes over 24 hrs. Over the years he has fine tuned his process which is a mix of baking science, feeling the dough and climate (too cold, too hot, too dry) and a whole lot of magic!

What does it feel like to arrive at Tegwaan? Check this out for a little hint of what it’s like. When we used to live in Joburg and come to Tegwaan for the weekend (before we became the current custodians of this great place) I could feel the weight literally drop off my shoulders. There’s something about coming through the small pine tree forest, and getting that first glimpse of the ponds with the wide expanse of countryside behind them. Your hearing recalibrates from cars and people to trees and birds. I think they call it nature-therapy :)

The Rock Fairies Waterfall hike is 9 km (3.5 hrs) starting from Tegwaan crossing the plateau, dropping down the escarpment, traversing the hillside through an indigenous forest and then following the river upstream to the 50m waterfall. It’s a beautiful and invigorating hike! The varied microclimates, flora and fauna provide a stunning journey along the landscape. Free for day visitors and guests alike!

These stone walled structures stretch from Delmas in South Africa all the way to Great Zimbabwe. The area around Emgwenya is covered with tons of these structure, many of which you can only see in the winter when the grass is low. They include lines, circles, waves, contours - no single arrangement looks alike, each with their own personality. Some look like circular rooms with doorways, some like cattle corrals, some areas look like great places to garden, and some very clearly look like roads or channels but they are not smooth so would be a bit hard to even move along. The most common explanation (and there are many!) is that the Bokoni people built them from the 16th-17th centuries and were a flourishing agricultural society in an area which was long thought to be devoid of large cultural advancements.
