The elephant tusks are used for obtaining food, fighting (amongst males) and for self defence. They are actually their upper incisors, and grow continuously until they die at around 60 years old.

The park was proclaimed in 1898 initially as the Sabie Game Reserve by Paul Kruger the then president of the Transvaal Republic He first proposed the need to protect the animals of the Lowveld in 1884, but it took another 12 years to be proclaimed when the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was set aside for restricted hunting.

Collaborative hunting usually involves the males approaching the intended prey upwind with the intention of driving it towards lionesses hiding in the bush downwind. Lions are not as fast as most of their prey so they rely heavily on the element of surprise when hunting.
