The park was proclaimed in 1898 initially as the Sabie Game Reserve by Paul Kruger the then president of the Transvaal Republic He first proposed the need to protect the animals of the Lowveld in 1884, but it took another 12 years to be proclaimed when the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was set aside for restricted hunting.

Found throughout different regions of Africa, the three living species of zebra are the plains zebra, mountain zebra, and Grévy’s zebra. All three belong to the genus Equus, which also includes horses and donkeys.

The African buffalo is a large wild bovine species found throughout the African continent. Both male and female buffaloes have horns, with the most significant difference between the sexes being that males' horns are thicker.

Lions have always had an association with royalty and leadership. Their power is reflected in their impressive size and the fact that their lifestyles allow them to sleep a lot - up to 18 hours a day.

Lions hunt either collaboratively or by themselves. Collaborative hunting usually involves the males approaching the intended prey upwind with the intention of driving it towards lionesses hiding in the bush downwind. Lions are not as fast as most of their prey so they rely heavily on the element of surprise when hunting.

The 2 000 000 hectares Kruger National Park in South Africa can only be described as huge! It’s about the same size as the whole of Israel, a little smaller than Belgium and about a third of the size of Ireland.
