During the Woman’s Month we embarked on the journey to Giant’s Castle

From the treacherous wind to the near cancellation due to a fire escape could have backed these two ladies away from the challenge, but the adventurous spirit within them fought well and hard to conquer all obstacles to get to the top.

We started the Giant’s pass in the early hours before sunrise to summit during the morning and return in time for breakfast, but the wind had other plans for us.

A shiny day at Central Drakensberg with a lovely group of Dutch people.

We experienced our first big rain yesterday but we woke up to see a sheet of snow in the Drakensberg escarpment, how interesting it’s.

Florist, this is the best time to explore the Berg because there’s no best time to be spoilt for choice than the Spring.

Tugela Falls, located in the Drakensberg (Dragon’s Mountains) of South Africa, is the world’s tallest waterfalls. It is comprised of five free-leaping cascades that drop a total of 948 meters (3,110 feet). The falls originate from the Thukela by River, which plunges down the sheer cliffs of the Amphitheatre, a prominent geological feature in the Royal Natal National Park.

Key Facts about Tugela Falls:

1. Height: Tugela Falls is often cited as the second-highest waterfall in the world, although it is actually the tallest in the world.

2. Location: The falls are situated in the Royal Natal National Park within the Drakensberg mountain range, part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The trail goes through Free State and eventually places you in KwaZulu Natal

3. Hiking Routes: There are two main hiking routes to view the falls:

- Sentinel Peak Hike: This hike offers a dramatic and close-up view of the falls from the top of the Amphitheatre. It is about a 6 km hike from the Sentinel car park, featuring chain ladders that aid the climb.
- Tugela gorge Trail: This trail provides views from the base of the Amphitheatre and the lower cascades of the falls. It starts from Thendele Camp and is less strenuous than the Sentinel Peak hike.

4. Seasonality: The best time to view Tugela Falls is during the summer months (November to February), when the river flow is at its peak due to seasonal rainfall. In the winter, the flow can be much reduced.

5. Flora and Fauna: The region around Tugela Falls is rich in biodiversity. Hikers may encounter various endemic plant species and wildlife, including elands, baboons, and a variety of bird species.

Tugela Falls is not just a natural wonder but also an integral part of the Drakensberg’s scenic beauty and a significant draw for eco-tourism, aligning with sustainable tourism practices that promote environmental stewardship and cultural heritage conservation.
