Meet the new king of Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia. 🦁 Born in 2017 in the park, this incredible male has grown up to dominate the plains.

Before the Zambian DNPW and the Barotse Royal Establishment partnered with African Parks to manage Liuwa Plain National Park in 2003, wildlife populations, especially predators, were in decline and only one lioness remained. Affectionately known as ‘Lady Liuwa’, she roamed the plains alone for years until we began a series of reintroductions in 2008 to reunite her with her own kind. Although Lady Liuwa passed away from natural causes in 2017, her pride continues to thrive and has grown to a total of 14 individuals today.

Today is World Wildlife Day and the theme is "Recovering Key Species for Ecosystem Restoration".

"Over the past year, through the Kafue Priority Support Plan, African Parks has invested significantly in the restoration of Kafue National Park. Amongst other activities, law enforcement efforts have yielded significant results in reducing illegal activity pressures on all wildlife species, allowing them the space and opportunity to play their natural roles in the Greater Kafue Ecosystem."

Currently seasonal water levels are rising in the park and the plains are becoming flooded. Due to poor access in places the park is now closed for the wet season. This applies to self-drive visitors only and Time +Tide King Lewanika Lodge is still open and accessible by air.

The park Tourism Centre can be reached on +260 96416 8394 and [email protected] for enquiries and bookings. We look forward to welcoming you back when the water recedes!

Today is World Wild dog Day. Wild dog are one of Africa’s widest ranging carnivores, requiring large tracks of land in order to thrive. With only 6600 dogs left in Africa Kafue National Park provides a crucial stronghold for this endangered species.

Today Zambia’s Minister of Tourism and Arts Hon. Ronald K. Chitotela attended an inaugural event in Kafue National Park to mark the implementation of the Priority Support Plan, lauding the first steps taken within our collaboration with the Zambian Government to boost Kafue’s social, ecological and economic potential. These included the official hand-over of motor vehicles, air assets, equipment and first quarter salaries for the conservation and management of Kafue. Announced in February this year, the Priority Support Plan is a collaboration between the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and African Parks, aimed at increasing technical and financial support for Kafue, worth US$3.4 million over a period of 12 months. During the event, the Minister commented that the Zambian Government takes great pride in the progress that has already been achieved these past two months, and remains committed to the further advancement of this extraordinary wildlife sanctuary and the communities surrounding it.

“Kafue is uniquely positioned to become one of Africa’s greatest wildlife strongholds and an exceptional tourist experience. We look forward to working closely with the Zambian Government to realise Kafue’s full potential as a long-term economic asset for Zambia and a healthy ecosystem with far-reaching benefits for people in the KAZA TFCA region” said African Parks’ CEO Peter Fearnhead.

The Priority Support Plan is funded through the Postcode Loterij dreamfund grant, a 16.9 million Euro contribution awarded to WWF, African Parks and Peace Parks Foundation for integrated initiatives in the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA-TFCA).

In collaboration with African Parks and DNPW, the Liuwa team conducted an aerial tracking flight this past week. Since the plains are flooded, the majority of the park is inaccessible - even on motor bikes. Therefore, aerial tracking flights are a fundamental part of the demography work - especially during the rainy season. Luckily for us, the majority of the collared carnivores and wildebeest were located. After a very big wet season it is starting to dry up and soon teams can start venturing further afield.

We are excited to announce that our project “Addressing multiple threats to elephants and people by reinstating the boundary fence of Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park” is now supported by IUCN Save Our Species and co-funded by European Commission - Development & Cooperation - EuropeAid

With this support, we hope to be able to support the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to install solar-powered electricity on the boundary fence to prevent elephants from moving out of the National Park and into adjacent residential areas of Livingstone, thereby keeping elephants safe and preventing negative impacts of elephants on the lives and property of residents living adjacent to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
