This safari is aimed at giving you the perfect photo opportunity with the African Pitta, and several others like African Broadbill, Narina Trogon and Pel’s Fishing Owl. To make this happen, we will spend four nights at Zambia’s best site for the Pitta, from 5-9 Dec. We will be based right near the Pitta’s breeding sites in southern Zambia, where Lapwing Safaris will set up a bushcamp, placing us as close to the display sites as possible.

"Birds In Habitat": thicket must be among the most wearying and uncomfotable of environments to explore, and a heavy zoom lense doesn't make things easier. Little wonder that the photographer finally dumped the big stuff, and decided to go Macro!

Two interesting things about Trogons:
1. unique toe configuration, termed heterodactyl, in which two toes face forward and two backward. Similar to the zygodactyl formation in owls, parrots and woodpeckers, but with the toes in a different order;
2. the vivid turquoise on the throat, which only shows when singing.
