In South Luangwa’s dry season, the river becomes a stage for dramatic wildlife interactions, and few are as intense as this: a crocodile feeding frenzy. Hundreds of Nile crocodiles converge on a succumbed hippo carcass, taking advantage of this vital opportunity for sustenance. Crocodiles are remarkably efficient predators and survivors. They can go months, even up to a year, without eating, relying on fat reserves stored in their tails. After a feast like this, they can enter a state of dormancy, conserving energy and waiting patiently for the next opportunity. Towards the end of the dry season, resources are scarce, and territorial battles among hippos escalate. Our young and maturing male leopard, Chisomo, is showcasing immense potential to become a formidable force within the panthera lineage of South Luangwa. This season, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing his confidence grow tremendously, particularly in his interactions with hyenas. What was once a fluffy, adventurous cub with a big imagination is now a determined leopard learning to hold his ground. Watching him intimidate scavengers, stand firm, and even push hyenas off carcasses has been a remarkable step forward in his journey to finding his place in the valley. For a leopard, survival in South Luangwa isn’t just about hunting—it’s about navigating the constant presence of scavengers and other predators. Hyenas, who relentlessly trail leopards, present one of the biggest challenges. Much like his mother, Chisomo is beginning to show little respect for them, building the strategic mindset and boldness that will be key to his success. At dusk along the sandy banks of the Luangwa River, I had the rare privilege of witnessing a pack of African wild dogs in their lively greeting ceremony. As one of the most critically endangered wildlife species, African wild dogs are always a special sighting, and this gathering was no exception. This greeting ritual is more than a simple social gathering. Through excited chirps, twitters, and body language, the pack bonds and builds the energy needed for an evening of cooperative hunting. Observing this ritual firsthand highlights not only the complex social dynamics of African wild dogs but also the role that conservation plays in preserving such moments. Without the dedication to African wildlife conservation, sightings like this would be far rarer. Thanks to the incredible work of @thezambiancarnivoreprogram, the wild dog population in South Luangwa has shown steady growth, helping sustain a critically endangered species within one of Africa’s prime safari regions. Their on-the-ground conservation efforts have allowed us the chance to view multiple packs this season: one that crossed the river into our area and another denning further inland. The youngest member of the Nsefu Pride struts along the riverbank with remarkable confidence, leading the pride as if he owns the plains. It’s amazing to see such a young lion in such strong condition—not just physically, but with an intensity and assurance well beyond his age. Being part of a large, powerful pride with dominant lionesses who’ve managed to chase our Lion Camp Pride out of the area for the time being, this cub is growing up in a world of strength and resilience. The Nsefu Pride has shown they’re a force, securing the best access to resources and keeping the young well-fed and protected. During our time with them, they fed on at least three buffalo—likely stealing two from our pride and taking down one themselves. This little cub has been thriving, moving from one meal to the next, pot-bellied and content, brimming with that confidence only a well-nourished young lion can have.
