Munda Wanga Environmental Park

In 1950, Ralph Sander, a civil servant, dreamed of starting his own botanical garden, which he called 'Munda Wanga'. Initially private, it grew and attracted visitors, generating income. The garden also served as a site for young Zambians to display their skills. In 1968, the Government of Zambia purchased the Gardens and added a large area of land to develop a collection of animals. Munda Wanga suffered neglect, but in 1998, a new lease was signed with the Munda Wanga Trust. The gardens are now neat, tidy, and identified, and animals are housed in open-topped enclosures. An Environmental Education Centre was added in 2000, funded by embassies to provide environmental education to Zambian Youth.

Lusaka National Museum, Zambia: A Window into the Soul of a Nation

Emanating from Zambia's core, the Lusaka National Museum is a testament to the nation's rich history and vibrant culture. Situated in the bustling city of Lusaka, the museum offers an enlightening journey through time, telling the story of the nation's evolution from ancient roots to modern times.

In development since the 1980s, the museum opened its doors to the public in October 1996. Originally intended to showcase Zambian independence history, it expanded to encompass a broader spectrum of cultural history by the time of its inauguration.

Housed in the African Modern Art building, the museum expertly curates its vast collection, some meticulously preserved in storage rooms, others displayed across two galleries on the ground and upper floors.

The lower gallery pays tribute to contemporary art, presenting a vivid portrait of Zambian life through a mix of paintings, sculptures, and models. It beautifully captures the essence of Zambia's people and their way of life, painting a diverse and captivating picture.

Ascending to the upper gallery, visitors are immersed in a captivating narrative of Zambia's evolution. The exhibits trace the nation's journey from ancient times through historical epochs to its present reality. This gallery also features a children's corner, an interactive display popular with younger visitors.

At the time of independence, Zambia faced significant challenges despite its vast mineral wealth. Weak domestic infrastructure, a shortage of trained and educated citizens to run the government, and heavy reliance on foreign expertise were among the obstacles. Zambia also found itself surrounded by neighbors who were either still colonies or under white minority rule.

The Lusaka National Museum not only showcases the past but also invites visitors to engage with Zambia's present and future. As it continues to evolve, the museum remains a vital educational resource, a cultural touchstone, and a repository of the complex and inspiring Zambian story.

Anthrax kills elephant in Livingstone!

An Elephant has died of suspected anthrax in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Livingstone.

Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba said blood and soil samples from the animal’s carcass and area where it was found dead have been taken for laboratory analysis in Lusaka to ascertain the actual cause of death.

“Considering the threat of anthrax that we have in the province [Southern Province] and few other places around the country, we did not want to rule out anthrax,” Mr Sikumba said in an interview yesterday.

“We have destroyed the carcass by burning it and also making sure that the area where that animal was found dead was disinfected.”

The minister said soon after receiving a report from Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) of a dead elephant in the park, staff in his ministry and the veterinary department in Livingstone collected blood and soil samples for further laboratory testing.

“What we did was to get in touch with the veterinary department and together with my team, they collected samples from this animal which was found dead,” he said.

“The samples were gotten and transported to Lusaka.”

THE LUMANGWE FALLS ( The dwelling place of the Great Snake Spirit )

Near the Chipembe Pontoon in the Northern Province, there is an impressive waterfall that resembles a smaller version of Victoria Falls. It is 35m / 115ft high and 100m / 328ft across, and it nourishes a small rainforest on the Kalungwishi River. The waterfall is quite magnificent and definitely worth the 9km / 6mi detour off the main road from Kawambwa to Mporokoso. It is a perfect place for camping, with visitor facilities available. Due to its remote location, you might be the only person there. Legend has it that the waterfall is the dwelling place of the Great Snake Spirit named Lumangwe. According to old tales, the snake was believed to have stretched itself between the Lumangwe and Kabweluma Falls, covering a distance of 5km / 3mi. This is a sacred area, and just downstream is the sole known habitat of an indigenous flower called Zygotritonia atropurpurea, which belongs to the watsonia family.

A WEEK OF ZAMBIA KU CHALO
This week has been a continuous mood booster for all of us in the Tourism Industry.
Slightly over a year ago, we stood at the break of dawn at the David Livingstone Islands to commit to reposition Destination Zambia. The Zambia Tourism Agency led a record number of operators to the World Travel Market in London supported by our Permanent Secretary Mr. Evans Muhanga.
On Wednesday , our Tourism Secretary at Zambian Mission in Washington DC Mrs Angela Chimpinde ably showcased our destination on the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
On Friday 10th November , we handed over certificates for the two hundred and sixty (260) Destination Frontline representatives from Kazungula Border, Katima Mulilo Border, Victoria Falls Border and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Airport.
The training that was facilitated by the Zambia Institute for Tourism & Hospitality Studies and the Chartered Institute for Customer Management was undertaken as a Destination Preparedness intervention in recognition of the challenges faced by visitors entering Destination Livingstone by both air and road.
As part of our initiatives implemented under the Tourism Development Fund, we are confident that this intervention will yield positive results for the destination and improve the overall visitor experience.

Nsumbu National Park

Covering an area of 10,000km², the Nsumbu-Mweru ecosystem is the core of an exceptional landscape situated between the great African lakes of Tanganyika in the east and Mweru in the west. Water defines this terrain. Flowing from highland freshwater springs in pristine forests, to floodplains, rivers, lagoons, and wetlands that nourish a highly productive land together with its wildlife and people, these waters eventually empty into the world’s longest and most biodiverse lake – itself a biological marvel.

Lake Tanganyika is up to 1.5km deep and forms the world’s second-largest freshwater resource. It is estimated to harbor over 1,000 species of animals and is globally renowned for its Cichlids – a diverse group of fish that have influenced the ecosystem as well as our own comprehension of evolution in the natural world. Nsumbu National Park is the gem in this landscape, a place where elephants roam along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where vast impenetrable Itigi forests are found, and a fully protected watershed exists.

The preservation of the Nsumbu Tanganyika Ecosystem will establish a foundation of sustainability and biodiversity that will benefit people, flora, and fauna – not only locally, but also regionally.

MOSI OA TUNYA NATIONAL PARK

Bordered by Livingstone, farmland, and the Zambezi River, lies Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park - one of Zambia's smallest. It stretches for about 12km / 7.4mi along the Zambezi River, above Victoria Falls.

Livingstone itself borders ancient wildlife migration routes and river crossing points, some visited by elephants. Some routes are within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where wildlife can be observed year-round, with notable elephant presence in drier months.
Unique in Zambia, this park is the sole habitat for white rhinos, protected by scouts. It has man-made boundaries, ensuring a stable wildlife population. Alongside migratory elephants, it hosts various animals in diverse habitats. The park features the Old Drift Crossing Point and Cemetery, accessible from Livingstone by vehicle, foot, or boat. Despite being under-visited, its untouched beauty and the Eastern Cataract of Victoria Falls add to its appeal.

NDOLA

is an important commercial center located about 320km / 200mi north of Lusaka, Zambia. It serves as the gateway to the mineral-producing region of the country. Similar to Lusaka, Ndola has experienced rapid and extensive development.

The city is home to various manufacturing industries, including a major copper refinery that is currently closed. Despite the closure, copper remains Zambia's largest foreign exchange earner and the backbone of the national economy. Ndola has established itself as a significant commercial and light industrial center, as well as a junction and distribution hub for the Copperbelt complex. The Ndola refinery marks the end point of the 1,700 km / 1,056mi Tazama oil pipeline originating from Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The central business district of Ndola is lined with modern factories, offices, and shops. One of the main attractions in the city is the annual Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF).

Other points of interest include the Copperbelt Museum located on Buteko Avenue, the Mupapa Slave Tree on Makoli Avenue (where Swahili traffickers used to meet), and Lake Chilengwa, which boasts a depth of approximately 300m / 985ft. The Dag Hammarskjöld Crash Site Memorial, situated outside of town along the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriageway, commemorates a significant event in history when the Secretary-General of the United Nations lost his life in 1961. Some speculate that his death was orchestrated to benefit mining companies in the area.

SIMALAHA COMMUNITY CONSERVANCY

Simalaha, meaning 'come together,' perfectly captures the essence of the community conservancy formed by the Sesheke and Sekhute chiefdoms. Situated along the Zambezi River on the Zambezi-Chobe floodplain, Simalaha is a place where wildlife and people coexist, reminiscent of times long past.

Through a partnership with the Peace Parks Foundation, the vision of the Sesheke and Sekhute chiefs to rehabilitate and conserve the region has become a reality. This has uplifted local communities by creating income-generating opportunities through nature-based economies and tourism, all made possible by the development of this wildlife conservancy and the implementation of sustainable natural resource management.

Simalaha is an integral part of the Kavango Zambezi Transformation Conservancy Area (KAZA), the world's largest trans-frontier conservation area spanning five countries and covering 520,000 square kilometers (323,113 square miles). Its significance lies in its role in reestablishing wildlife populations and restoring migration routes within KAZA.

The plains of Simalaha have witnessed the reintroduction of wildebeest, zebra, red lechwe, puku, hartebeest, impala, waterbuck, giraffe, buffalo, eland, and sable. As more and more wildlife reclaim their ancestral migration paths, elephants have been observed retracing their historical timelines. Slowly but surely, the flood plains are once again teeming with wildlife, the forests are regaining their density, and the people are benefiting from this thriving ecosystem, just as they did in days gone by.

The Football Memorial Monument, also known as 'Bola na Lesa,' holds great significance for the Zambian people. It serves as a tribute to the members of the Men's National team, Chipolopolo, who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in 1993.

The monument was unveiled in 1994 at the Independence Stadium complex, which is a significant sporting venue in Zambia. It stands as a symbol of remembrance, honoring the players who were on their way to play a World Cup qualifier when the tragedy occurred.

The monument is a powerful reminder of the deep connection between football and the Zambian people. Football is not just a sport but a way of life and a source of immense national pride. The phrase 'Bola na Lesa,' which translates to 'Ball in God's hands,' has become synonymous with Zambian football and represents the spiritual and emotional bond that exists between the game and the nation.

The Football Memorial Monument stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the Chipolopolo team and serves as a source of inspiration for future generations of Zambian footballers. It is a place where people can gather to pay their respects, reflect on the tragedy, and celebrate the enduring spirit of Zambian football.

BAROTSE FLOODPLAIN

Welcome to the Barotse Floodplain, where fishing enthusiasts can experience unparalleled tiger and bream fishing! This Western Province gem consistently produces record catches, thanks to the floodplains that swell and flood during the rainy season (around November to about April), providing breeding grounds for large volumes of baitfish. These are gradually washed into the main channels, attracting the impressive volumes of large tiger fish and bream in this area. The ideal time to visit the Barotse Floodplain for fishing is during the winter months, from May to August. This is an excellent time of year to catch the enormous tigers and great bream as the floodplains empty into the main channels.

But it's not just fishing that makes the Barotse Floodplain special. With water comes life, and this is evident by the significant populations and variety of water birds that are present. Imagine spotting the black heron, squacco heron, Madagascar pond heron, rufous-bellied heron, African skimmer, and pied kingfisher in their natural habitat! And if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the vast colony of African openbill storks, located near the confluence of the Luanginga and Zambezi Rivers. This is a designated Ramsar sight and a feast for birders.

Getting to the Barotse Floodplain is easy during the dry season, as you can reach it by road from Livingstone. However, it's important to note that the roads are generally impassable during the rainy season due to the increased water levels. Also known as Bulozi, Lyondo, or the Zambezi Floodplain, this destination continues to attract visitors from around the world with its abundant fishing opportunities and diverse birdlife. So what are you waiting for? Come and experience the beauty of the Barotse Floodplain for yourself!
