In 2023 Gonarezhou National Park saw a 21% increase in tourist numbers, with almost 11 000 people visiting the park, compared to 8 993 in 2022. It’s the highest number of visitors ever recorded for the park.

This growth in sustainable tourism not only shows an increase in people valuing wild, protected Gonarezhou, it also provides benefits to surrounding communities through employment and business opportunities. At Gonarezhou, tourism revenue generated is directly reinvested back into the management of the Park. So, by visiting Gonarezhou you are supporting our conservations effort in numerous ways.

Things have been pretty exciting at camp the past few days: Poppy the leopard has been spotted a few times, a herd of buffalo came to drink at the pan yesterday, and last night we had lions roaring throughout the night - and then they tried to take down a buffalo early this morning.

*A few fun facts about buffalo*

Did you know around 3 different herds of buffalo regularly come drink at our pan? The herd size ranges from 150-300, although this increases to 500-600 in the drier months.

Adult buffalo drink about 25 litres of water (or more if water is readily available) each time they drink. That means if a herd of 300 come to our waterhole, they’re consuming at least 7,500 litres of water - within minutes!

It’s an amazing thing to experience, especially if you’re lucky enough to be in the hide when they come through.

….On a recent morning game drive on the Bomani concession, whilst watching our lions Mzilikazi and Tegwane honeymooning (again) this spectacle unfolded nearby.

Our resident female Martial Eagle out with her newly fledged son decided to take on a Spur-winged Goose, first time it dived under the water but when it resurfaced she had another go at it, got her claws in but couldn’t subdue it, she only just escaped and her son had to give her top cover when the goose came back at her, they both departed to a nearby tree and glared at the goose.

As a matter of interest, and to give you an idea of the size of both species, a Martial Eagle's average wingspan is 212 cm (83 in) and average weight is 4 kg (9 lb), compared to the Spur-winged Goose which averages between 150-200 cm (60-80 in) wingspan and an average weight of 4-5 kg (9-11 lb)!

Khwai Leadwood takes its cues from the wild Okavango Delta.

Distinctly African and designed to reimagine a classic tented safari, Khwai Leadwood draws inspiration from traditional craftmanship and natural textures: Handwoven Kavango baskets dyed using the bark of ebony trees, ebonized timber furniture, antiques, and a bold mustard color palette reminiscent of winter grasses and water lilies in the afternoon sun.

Discover luxury in Botswana’s wild heart.

M8 BULAWAYO-VICTORIA FALLS

It is very likely that John Maynard Keynes never actually uttered word for word a 'quote' which is often attributed to him, ie "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?". But he certainly, and frequently, uttered sentiments to this effect. So, I am reaching for my inner Keynes as far as the M8 is concerned and, having defended it in previous posts up to the start of this year (when we dropped our daughter off for her first term at Falcon College) I now have to concede that much of it is not in great condition. At the start of this month I drove from Vic Falls to the Dinson coking plant past Hwange and back; and last week Victoria C Newton and I made our first trip to Falcon since the start of term (with the prospect of driving there and back again next week for the end of term). Clearly, the road had deteriorated more than somewhat on some quite long stretches, despite the poor rains this past season; and some parts are decidedly dangerous thanks to its propensity to lull one into a false sense of security. BUT overall it is still better than all too many roads on this side of the border and it was good to see a repair team moving pretty rapidly away from Bulawayo towards Lupane infilling with asphalt as they went.
Both there and back took us a drive time of around 5 hours 40 minutes to do the 440km; but I know some parents, bolder than I, travelling on the same days as we did knocked up to 30 minutes off that.
On the way back Victoria took notes which I have now transcribed into a spreadsheet indicating the road conditions as we found them. I have then reflected these into Vic Falls to Bulawayo distances not least for our own guidance as we head back on Tuesday. Note that the distances in the sheet may not be absolutely exact and, of course, my description of the road conditions is somewhat subjective. Furthermore, the road conditions will change - hopefully for the better where the asphalting is ongoing. Still, I am posting it as some page followers may find it useful. — with Victoria C Newton and Lizette Swart.

🐘🐘Park Update 18 March 2024 🐘🐘

Despite the lack of consistent rain over the last months, last week the park received a considerable fair amount of rain. Many, particularly the wildlife, were relieved that the rains fell at just the right moment, and the proof is everywhere - healthy bushes, and a fresh carpet of green along the ground.
For those visiting the Park anytime sooner, all river and sand crossings are closed except for the Nkwagulatilo Causeway.

Although some parts of the Park is still closed, the tourism infrastructure team is busy preparing them, doing some repairs and maintenance work in preparation for their reopening, on the Easter Holidays. In the past week, the team was working on Chipale Tented Camp, and many will the happy to know that the shade issue has been dealt with.

In other news, our Monitoring and Evaluation team Rumbi and Elice recently returned from Namibia after attending the First SMART Global Congress. During the congress they attended workshops to learn more about the software and also made a presentation- sharing our experiences with SMART.

On the Scientific Services side, a versatile team of external researchers are currently stationed at our Edson and Patience Gandiwa Research Centre. The team is studying the killifish ecology and evolution in the Park. Utilizing the research lab they will be performing on-site DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing via Nanopore MinION.

Gonarezhou Conservation Trust- an innovative conservation partnership continues to be an inspiration to other conservation sanctuaries across the continent. During the week we hosted a delegation from Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) that had visited us to better understand more how our conservation model works. Through this interaction, the goal is to enhance the quality of wildlife management in both organisations, fostering the exchange of knowledge, experience, and innovation across borders while promoting international cooperation between organisations facing common environmental and stewardship challenges.

That’s all from us this week.

Chilo Gorge Tented Camp at Mahove: where luxury tents sit nestled on the edge of the Runde River, where wildlife roams freely and only the sounds of nature can be heard. It is remote, wild and incredible, positioned deep in the Gonarezhou National Park. Enjoy comforts and the wilderness together.

In rural Zimbabwe, 158 bright young minds received new school bags.

Thanks to the incredible partnership with Wildhood Foundation, 200 children in primary and secondary school are being empowered through scholarships, 70% of which are girls.

Through wildlife and environmental education programmes and immersive field trips with rangers, we're fostering a generation that not only learns about the importance of conservation but also develops a genuine love and respect for the world around them.

MWANGA LODGE & BALLY VAUGHAN NEWS

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Here is some news from us…
Births... 2 gorgeous Zonkeys (Zebra cross Donkey) were born in Bally Vaughan game park recently.
Riki Tiki Tot Tot , our inquisitive, vocal, adorable Banded Mongoose (rescued), is growing up fast and is keeping everyone entertained with his antics! Debbie commented... "God seems to bless us with a new wild pet when we need encouragement." Riki Tiki Tot Tot sure is doing that!
Our lovely Bengal tiger cubs, Ouachita and Flame, keep growing... and playing.
Green grass and wetlands bloom, in spite of low rain fall (we pray for more) .
Bally Vaughan's vibrant, protected miombo ecosystem with deep leaf litter under growing tall forests, captures as much rainfall as possible (almost), and retains it in organic rich top soils and leaf litter, to slowly trickle out into our wetlands and crystal streams.

🐘
In February of 2023 Matusadona’s rangers logged 986 total extended patrol man days, 60 local patrols, 219 lake patrols and 106 strategic patrols.

🐘 🐘
In February of this year, 1,182 total extended patrol man days were accrued alongside 163 local patrols, 327 lake patrols, and 98 strategic patrols - this is thanks to the additional 34 rangers recruited and trained in the last quarter of 2023, and subsumed into the ranger core ranks at the beginning of this year; this is also thanks to the ongoing up-skilling and refresher training of what is now a ranger unit of 90 strong.

🐘🐘🐘
There has not been a single elephant lost to poaching since 2020 within the park - that’s three years without a single instance of illegal wildlife trade related poaching under the Matusadona Conservation Trust.

The Parks & Wildlife Management Authority joins the world today in celebrating International Women's Day. We acknowledge the invaluable role that women play in conservation, moreso in leadership positions.

The Zimparks Directorate has six positions, with three courageous women playing critical roles towards the success of the Authority's conservation efforts.

This example and many others bear testimony to our beliefs in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
