Did you know that Munhumutapa, often referred to as Mwenemutapa, was a powerful and influential monarch who ruled over a vast empire in southern Africa during the 15th century? His reign marked the rise of the Mutapa Empire, which thrived on trade, particularly in gold and ivory, and extended across modern-day Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Born as Nyatsimba Mutota, he was a warrior prince from the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe. He embarked on an epic journey to expand his territory, initially seeking new sources of salt. This quest led him to conquer various tribes, including the Tavara, establishing a kingdom that would become a major player in regional trade.
⚔️ Expansion and Influence ⚔️
Under his leadership, the empire flourished. His son, Nyanhewe Matope, further expanded their reach into coastal kingdoms and established strong alliances through voluntary membership in the Great Council of the Empire. By 1480, just 50 years after its inception, the Mutapa Empire had reached its zenith!

The arrival of Portuguese traders in the early 16th century brought both opportunity and challenges. In this video a group of young creatives came together to show cultural heritages around the country . As some of you may have noticed that is the Harare Toposcope Kopje .At the time of the Pioneer Column's occupation in September 1890 ,the Kopje belonged to Chief Gutsa 's people who had taken possession from Chief Mbare after they defeated him in a skirmish.The are no Iron Age building still standing at this site but it remains a well known landmark. It was at the Kopje that the British settlers set up the Union Jack after displacement and massacre of the Mbari Clan . Today the Kopje is a popular site for fitness enthusiasts offering a beautiful aerial view of the city .
