It's a date for every woman in and those visiting.

What does head covering represent in the Bible?

A woman's covering her head (e.g., with a thin head scarf) socially indicated that she was married. It symbolized her modesty and chastity and submission to her husband. A wife who refused to cover her head publicly disgraced her husband.

DID YOU KNOW...?

That the Kariba Dam is located approximately halfway down the Zambezi River.?
The first mention of the Kariba Gorge was in a dispatch sent by the renowned Portuguese explorer Manuel Baretto, dated 11 December 1667. It is thought however that this does not refer to Kariba, but to some other gorge, there being numerous others towards the sea along the Zambezi River.
Frederick Courteney Selous entered the gorge on 24 November 1877 which is nearly 200 years after the possible visit by Manuel Baretto.

The Electricity Supply Commission instigated an investigation for possible hydroelectric schemes to be situated at Kariba and in 1941 funds were allocated. As a result of this survey, a river gauging station was set up at Chirundu as well as at a campsite 25 kilometers downstream from the present dam wall.

Both Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) were in contention as it was thought that the Kafue River Gorge in Northern Rhodesia was preferable to Kariba. The matter was solved in 1951 by a board of experts known as “The Panel” who all agreed that the dam be built on the Zambezi River, at the Kariba Gorge site.

In August 1955, the then Federal Government of Rhodesia and Nyasaland ( Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi ) called for tenders for the construction of the dam wall. The contract for the construction of the wall and power station was awarded to the Italian consortium Impresit on 16 July 1956.
Kariba Dam was designed by the French engineer and inventor Andre Coyne. A specialist in “arch dams”, he personally designed over 55 dams, Kariba being one of them.

In September 1956 engineers started excavation of the foundation for the dam and powerhouse for the power station on the south bank. The power stations are some 152 meters below ground level. Over one million cubic meters of rock was excavated.

By December 1956, the north bank cofferdam and diversion tunnel were both completed. Blocks of the main dam containing four temporary openings were concreted inside this cofferdam. A suspension footbridge was also built downstream of the dam site.

In March 1958, there was an unprecedented flood amounting to about 16 000 cubic metres per second of water which passed through the site flooding the cofferdam causing considerable damage and disruption. Parts of the suspension footbridge were swept away and the river gorge rose some 34 meters above the low water level. Kariba dam was originally designed to have only four spillway gates. This flood called for a re-design and finally, six gates were installed.

After this flood, construction of the dam progressed inside the main cofferdam and above the blocks built earlier in the north bank cofferdam. By December 1958, water began building up behind the dam wall as the diversion tunnel and temporary opening were blocked. For the first time in thousands of years the free flow of the night Zambezi River ceased!

In December 1959, the first generator was commissioned and on 17 May 1960, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, officially opened the Kariba Hydro-Electric Scheme.

Kariba North Bank Power Station was commissioned in 1976.

Our Story

The Kariba Publicity Association was started in 1994 as a volunteer support group for businesses in Kariba. Shortly after, it was voted Zimbabwe’s best Publicity Association in 1998. Between 2000 and 2011, the Association went into a deep slumber as tourism slumped in Zimbabwe in general and Kariba in particular. In 2011, the Municipality of Kariba, realising the need for a vibrant publicity association, registered it as a Trust with the participation of other Kariba stakeholders, with the aim of marketing Kariba as an investment and tourist destination.

Its membership consists of corporates, small and medium enterprises, individuals and tourism & hospitality operators. The Association is designed to support businesses and tourism activities in Kariba. The major KPA objectives are: a. To publicise the amenities and natural resources of Kariba and its environs for the purpose of encouraging the growth of tourism, the establishment of industries and commercial undertakings within the area as well as establishment of cultural, recreational and sporting facilities within Kariba; and assist were possible in the overall preservation of the environment. b. To publish and disseminate any relevant information concerning Kariba and its environs through media. c. To provide an information Bureau for the benefit of tourists and visitors. The KPA has achieved quite a lot in the past. It received an award for the Best Publicity Association stand at Sanganai Travel expo in 2015. It is well known for its advocacy work in Kariba. The strategic direction and goals of the Association are the KPA’s response to its understanding of what its stakeholders value most about the organization, and current opportunities and challenges for offering a high-quality system of support in the community for stakeholders and members. The Kariba Publicity Association will be a highly visible, well-respected, nonprofit organization that attracts increased numbers of stakeholders and higher levels of contributions to support operations and the endowment fund in making Kariba the ultimate tourist destination. Successful implementation of this strategic plan will result in more quality support and services delivered to stockholders and shareholders, more members are welcome in the tourism and business community and a broader array of resources in the community valuing and supporting Kariba as a destination. The ultimate result that KPA aspires to achieve is far beyond high quality support services for tourists and business people - we aspire for a culture of excelence.
