Great weekend away..

A couple of weekends ago we went on a educational tour of the Caprivi Strip in Namibia, can't believe we waited for so long, it was so easy to do, a great four days and 3 National Parks. Will certainly promote Namibia more, it is very doable from Vic Falls, great birding, unique wildlife and extremely friendly people.
Dy one, we departed VF at 5:30, made the Botswana border by 6:30, no other tourists at that time of the day, crossing was seamless and done in less than 10 minutes. The drive through the Chobe was fun, roan, zebra, sable (+80) and elephant. The crossing into Namibia, just as easy. We reached our lodge by 9:30, took a drive around town while we waited for our room to be ready. Katima Mulilo was much larger than I expected, but pleasant and people actually obey the road rules there! That evening we went on a boat cruise down the Zambezi, would highly recommend birding enthusiasts do this, some nice photography and an excellent guide. Caprivi River Lodge was a fine place for our first night.

Silhouette of a Punk Rocker... Young Ground Hornbill, and in some parts of Africa, it is believed that should you kill a Hornbill the rains will come with such force that it will literally wash your land away. So strong is this belief, that in times of drought, rain-doctors will actually ritualistically kill a hornbill in order to bring the rain. Not good as these fantastic birds are considered 'vulnerable.'

Great day in Hwange, Robins - Main Camp.. 14 species do not as many as usual but great to see some rain at Robins. Now for a good nights sleep at The Siding. Then return tomorrow.

The Zambian road block, I don’t know what phenomenon causes rain to stop at the Zambezi but yesterday afternoon it did it again, yes we got a little shower but driving the length of the Zambezi National park it literally honked down just 1 mile away…

Ground Hornbill, becoming endangered. Although they live a long time they are not very successful breeders. Only the dominant male and female of the group breed, and most pairs remain monogamous throughout their lives. The other group members are primarily male birds that help defend the group's territory and care for the chicks. They can live up to 70 years in captivity.
