The Zambezi River
The Zambezi River is a long and major river in south-central Africa that flows eastward from Zambia to the Indian Ocean.
It forms or crosses the borders of six countries: Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. It is the fourth-longest river in Africa and the largest flowing into the Indian Ocean from Africa. It has a large basin area of 1,390,000 square kilometres. It is known for its scenic attractions, such as the Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorge, and its rich wildlife, especially in the protected areas along its banks
Some interesting facts about the Zambezi River are:
The source of the Zambezi River is a marshy black wetland, called a dambo, in the Mwinilunga District in north-west Zambia, 1,500 metres above sea level.
The Zambezi River flows over several waterfalls, the most famous of which is the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a World Heritage Site. The Victoria Falls is also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “the smoke that thunders” in the local Tonga language.
The Zambezi River has surprisingly few bridges, despite its impressive length. Some of the notable bridges are the Otto Beit Bridge at Chirundu in Zimbabwe, the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, the Katima Mulilo Bridge between Namibia and Sesheke in Zambia, and the Tete Suspension Bridge in Mozambique.
The Zambezi River holds two massive sources of hydroelectric power: the Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe and the Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. The Kariba Dam is the world’s largest man-made lake, 226 kilometres long and up to 40 kilometres wide in some places. The Cahora Bassa Dam is an arch dam with a length of 171 metres and a maximum width of 303 metres.
.
The Zambezi River is home to a variety of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, such as crocodiles, hippos, elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, antelopes, zebras, giraffes, and many more. The river also supports a rich diversity of fish species, such as tigerfish,
